CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Six Sprint Cup drivers and two Nationwide Series drivers will lead all NASCAR fans in the USO Salute the Troops Memorial Day tribute to the armed forces on May 24-25 at Lowe's Motor Speedway to kick off a nationwide effort to raise funds for military families worldwide.

All will drive specially designed cars supporting branches of the military.

Distinguished members of the military on Tuesday kicked off the Salute the Troops tribute in grand style with a military color guard presentation and the presentation of the cars that will run in the Carquest Auto Parts 300 and the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day to show their support for America's armed forces. The USO Salute the Troops program hopes to raise funds for American military families in need through the effort.

"I love the fact that we are able to, through our Salute the Troops race weekend, show how much we care, show how much our troops mean to us and show our support," Gordon said. "I would like to do more because I think that is what Memorial Day is all about -- paying tribute to the men and women that fight so hard for us. They put their lives on the line for us to have the freedom to be able to do this every weekend and to be able to live in a country that has so many benefits."

The NASCAR team owners, sponsors, drivers and employees donated the space on their cars to collectively thank the armed forces.

Diecast models and officially licensed merchandise of the participating drivers will be available for sale through Motorsports Authentics.

"The USO is proud to be the beneficiary of the Salute the Troops campaign," said Edward A. Powell, USO president and CEO. "We thank Speedway Motorsports, Motorsports Authentics, the racing community and its fans for their continued support of our men and women in uniform and the USO. It is with great pleasure that the USO joins you in conveying our gratitude for their service and sacrifice"

UPDATE:

Supporting Those that Support OUR Troops

In response to publication that NASCAR was going to demonstrate their Support of Our Troops, the Troop Haters have issued a call to undermine both NASCAR and the Effort.  It is in the Interest of this Group to ensure that such a negative campaign by the opposition does not go unanswered.

It is crucial that NASCAR receive Postive Reinforcement for their Support of The Troops.

This was a response to the news in other circles:
"Nascar is a crappy excuse for a sport and should be banned for a year to save gasoline."

"That would be the partriotic thing to do.  All you nascar "patriots" out there can at least sacrafice a year of no races, right?  You can do that small sacrafice for your nation?  "

"It's time for all those super-patriotic Red-White-&-Blue nascar fans to write to the organization and demand a year of the races to be called off..."

Some of you will be doubly offended by the language and message of that.  Please distribute this message far and wide in Patriotic & NASCAR fan circles.  NASCAR needs to hear from US demonstrating the gratitude of REAL Americans.

I am very proud that NASCAR is supporting our troops in this manner. and hope other businesses follow suit. What a great country.

Actually the idea of no NASCAR for a year makes some sense but only if it is combined with no Prius, Subaru or Volvo driving for the same period of time.

God Bless our Troops!!!!!

Hooah - NASCAR is to be commended for their support of the Troops. NASCAR truly understands Freedom is not Free. Thanks to our brave Soldiers and strong leaders; this Great Nation will remain the Home of the Free.

Here in the South, where NASCAR originated, we strongly support the Troops. It is a source of pride to me that this holds true throughout NASCAR and the South.

Glad to see ya here S&S!

I am very appreciative of the support for our troops that NASCAR is going to display!

I believe that more events could also do their part in honoring our troops during these times.

Veterans and Organizations Supporting the Mission

Other Veterans Speaking Out

  • American Ranger - FL
Florida Veteran: Excellent Commentary and Analysis along with some war stories by a Ranger truly experienced in Warfare. His countdown to retirement is too close but most assuredably deserved.
  • Afghanistan Blog -1SG Troy - NY
New York Veteran: Some Families just give back to their Nation more than others and 1SG Troy's is one of them. His son serves in the theater Top left a year ago. His wife is featured in a recent local newspaper's report on Military Spouse Day.
  • CSM Vanguard - TN
Tennessee Veteran: A True Leader of Warriors. He has the distinction of being the Command Sergeant Major who led both a Hero and a Zero. The Hero, SFC Paul Smith, was the first recipient of the Medal of Honor in over a decade and The Zero was a Medic that joined with the IVAW to slander our Troops and our Military. The CSM tells these stories and more. He truly embodies the "Never Quit" attitude of our Troops and is a symbol of Strength and Endurance. He has EARNED my respect and it was a pleasure for me to have met him.
  • Views of a Veteran - Arkansas
Arkansas Soldier, Jacob is a Member of the VFF. He has afforded the Arkansas Congressional Delegation an opportunity to hear from Soldiers that have "been there, done that." Keep up the good work Jacob.
  • A Soldier's Perspective
I don't know too much about the author of this one yet, but the first look looks good.
  • American Angle
Tony may not advertise his Veteran Status but he is and he presents us with some of the wider issues surrounding our Nation. He makes no bones about putting the Nation first, above the interests of our enemies.
  • Eagles Up
Three (or more) Veterans that are Speaking Out. They're new to me but another ally in the Battle!
  • Veteran American Voices
Interesting Blog from WWII & Viet Nam Veterans. I truly enjoyed the analysis of the Winter Soldiers "hearings."

  • G.B Trudeau: Doonesbury.com's The Sandbox
An Unlikely Source, Trudeau has pledged all proceeds to the Fisher House. My copy of the book should be here Monday and a review will follow. 3 Articles from blogroll member -1SG Troy of New York are included. He has me nearly convinced this will be a good book and for a great cause.
  • LTC(ret) Grossman: On Combat
See the Article by MarineTilDeath in the full article here. I cannot recommend this book strongly enough for every past, present and future Warrior, whether Police or Military. (*****)
  • SFC(ret) Frank Antenori: Roughneck-91
Perhaps the best look into the inner workings of a Special Forces Team, written yet, as they train, prepare for war and go to both of our Current Conflicts. His team truly demonstrates the 'can-do' attitude which sets Special Operations troops apart from the rest of the world's troops. (*****)
  • LTG(ret) Michael DeLong: A General Speaks Out
Go Behind the Scenes at CentCom with the #2 General in charge of the Middle East Theater. He dispels myths and explains the decisions and personalities involved in the decisions made in the Who, What, Where, When and Why. When the SecDef needed an answer, this was the man he called. Clearly, he was a Marine's Marine leading the US Military at times of Great Peril. He speaks frankly and writes in a manner without political aspiration. (*****)
  • Robin Moore, RIP: The Hunt for Bin Laden
There is perhaps no other civilian author that has searched so deeply and learned so much about the "Green Berets", which happens to be the title of his earlier book, on which John Wayne's movie was based. Following the Invasion of Afghanistan, he went as quickly as he could get there and talked to the Men from the 5th Special Forces Group who were still there to hear the stories straight from the horses' mouths on how 200 Special Operations troops were able to rid the world of a tyranny and deal a deadly blow to the enemy Al-Qaeda Terrorists in the weeks following 9/11. (*****)
  • SSG David Bellavia: House To House
SSG Bellavia, Recipient of the Silver Star and recommended for the Medal of Honor takes us into the realities of Urban Combat. Another True Hero who will likely continue to lead this Nation forward as he continues to serve our Nation in new ways. (*****)
  • Marcus Luttrell: Lone Survivor
Marcus Luttrell, USN SeAL, and a true Hero takes the reader through his experiences including those that EARNED him the Navy Cross in Afghanistan. (*****)
