Mexico’s top immigration official has resigned in the aftermath of last month’s massacre of 72 migrants from Central and South America by suspected drug traffickers.
Mexico’s Interior Department said Tuesday that Cecilia Romero stepped down as the head of the National Institute of Migration. She had held the job since 2006.
The department gave no explanation for Romero leaving the job, but did praise her efforts in several areas.
The bodies of the migrants were discovered on August 24, on a ranch in the northeastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas, which borders (the U.S. state of) Texas.
An Ecuadorian who is one of two known survivors of the massacre told investigators the migrants were kidnapped by an armed group and taken to the ranch. He said the captors identified themselves as members of the Zetas drug gang.
