Puntland security forces staged a raid against the pirates Thursday in the village of Hul Nod in an effort to free the seven Danish hostages.
But the security officials were ambushed and at least seven people, including two pirates, were killed in the gunfight.
The Danish hostages – a family and the crew of their sailboat – were taken captive last month by pirates in the Indian Ocean.
Somali pirates also seized a yacht carrying four Americans in February, and killed them while U.S. naval forces tried to negotiate their release.
In an interview with VOA on Wednesday, a pirate spokesman said any attempts to rescue the hostages would result in the captives meeting “the same fate as the four Americans.”
