Whenever I hear the name USO, I immediately think of Bob Hope and the shows he would do overseas for the troops. The USO began 67 years ago.
What does the USO do? They are all about support of our military and its families. Support in the form of airport centers for weary travelers, family and community centers that provide orientation in unfamiliar locations and intercultural understanding. There are mobile USO centers that are in remote and often unstable regions of the world. In short, the USO is there to support our military whether they are here in the United States or deployed around the world.
The USO has 130 facilities around the world. They offer a wide range of services such as but not limited to, information referral services, internet access, housing and emergency assistance.
They also are involved in Operation Phone Home, USO Operation Care Package, United Thru Reading, Operation Enduring Care, and of course there are the entertainers that travel around the world to entertain our troops. Do you want to know exactly what entertainers travel with the USO? Check out their schedule and see for yourself.
The USO brings a wide variety of entertainment out to the troops from comedians to cheerleaders, bands and individual singers as well as wrestlers. They travel to the larger bases as well as the smaller more remote bases when possible. The performers do not receive any fees for their performances with the USO, but give freely of their time and talent.
You might have noticed an article I wrote yesterday on Spike TV. They joined along with the USO and United Thru Reading. Check out the article, it is quite an unusual venture they are working on. Spike TV expands True Dads: In Uniform together with the USO and United Through Reading
You can support the USO many different ways, so be sure to check out their site on the many different ways in which to donate and support them.
