After much searching, I have found the current details on the Sears "Heroes At Home" Wish Registry Program. The program was temporarily shut down.
“After reviewing the available details of the Wish Registry, we determined that, as structured, participation in the Wish Registry results in an improper solicitation,” Leigh Bradley, director of the Standards of Conduct Office for the Defense Department General Counsel, had written in an Oct. 14 letter to Sears.
As of now, October 28, 2008 the program is back up and running, with the approval of the Department of Defense. Sears has this statement on their website.
"All active military personnel are encouraged to apply for Heroes at Homesm Wish Registry. The popular promotion enables Americans to fulfill holiday wishes for up to 20,000 military personnel and has been extended through October 31. Sears Gift Cards will be granted in amounts up to $550. Sears has resolved the concerns of the U.S Department of Defense and the program is proceeding to support military personnel."
Sears will verify the participants, and then mail out a gift card. The gift card will have NO $ amount loaded onto it and may not be used at that time. On November 30, and December 26 the cards will have money added to them, with an amount NOT TO EXCEED $550 per recipient. This amount is limited so as not to create a financial hardship for the participants.
All participants will be anonymous, and at no time is any service member allowed to appear "in uniform" to promote the program for Sears. This would be a "misuse of their uniform".
Sears has extended the programs deadline for registering until October 31, 2008 and also upped the number of participants to 20,000 over the original 10,000 when the program started this year. ALL ranks are now eligible to participate instead of being limited to those E-6 and below.
