Here is a book written by a soldier, Second Lt. Korey Outerbridge, to help children understand, cope and feel better about the whole situation of having a family member deployed. What struck me as a bit odd is the fact that the author is single so how well can he understand the family dynamics he writes about in his book?
"Good Morning, Honey. Goodbye, Daddy. Goodnight, Sweetheart" is a book written to help both the child and the parent cope with a deployment, bringing his perspective from being deployed into the home in such a way that the child can better understand what is happening when Daddy has to go away, far far away.
Outerbridge understands because he has been there, he has seen what the parent is going through while deployed and uses that knowledge to explain it in a book that goes right to the heart of the matter. He focuses on the interactions between a father, his daughter and their family as they go about their daily life. When the call to deploy comes, we are able to see how the father talks to his daughter about where he will be going and explains that no matter how far away he is, she will always be in his heart. Being gone a few days or weeks is very hard on a child, but being gone for months is like forever in their minds. It is a book for the child and also a book intended for the service member to be able to read to their child.
