U.S. forces use aerial strike on bunker to destroy weapons cache
Multi-National Division – North - FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARHORSE, DIYALA, Iraq – In cooperation with Iraqi security forces, the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division coordinated an aerial strike on a bunker in southern Diyala province, July 25.
The bunker was discovered to contain an active weapons cache during a combined patrol in the area.
The cache had been booby-trapped with homemade explosives and the patrol assessed it to be unsafe
U.S. forces coordinated for two air-delivered munitions targeting the bunker, located in a remote area south of Balad Ruz, away from any population centers. There were no reported casualties following the air strike.
The strike was carried out in accordance with guidelines set forth in the Security Agreement between the United States and the Government of Iraq. Iraqi Security Forces at the Diyala Operation Center approved the strike, and U.S. forces continued coordination with their Iraqi counterparts throughout the mission.
