Decoding the Facts
During World War II, American Prisoners of War (POWs) at Stalag Luft III utilized a variety of tactics for escape, from encoding messages to creating elaborate tunnel systems. Department X of the U.S. Military Intelligence Service (MIS-X) devised a secret code to communicate with the POWs and send supplies as needed. Until recently, the entire scheme had remained one the most guarded secrets of the war.
