Iraqi police arrest terrorist suspects with warrants

Multi-National Division – North PAO - FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARRIOR, KIRKUK, Iraq – Iraqi police arrested three individuals July 22, on warrants for conducting attacks against security forces and the civilian population.

Iraqi police from the town of Laylan, supported by Soldiers from the 4th Squadron, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, conducted the operation.

“This is a great example of the professionalism of the police in Kirkuk province,” said Maj. Chris Norrie, the operations officer for 2nd Brigade Combat Team.  “They were completely in the lead and used minimal force to accomplish the mission.”

BALAD — Shipping containers arrive here daily filled with every imaginable item: toilet paper, pens, pencils, turbine engines, Humvee repair parts, even a rock climbing wall.

As Coalition forces continue their responsible drawdown from Iraq and close bases, Mobile Redistribution Teams (MRTs) comb installations looking for excess property. The items are then containerized and shipped to the Forward Redistribution Point (FRP) here for further processing.

"Up to three years ago, these items stayed behind or sometimes ended up in a burn pit, because there simply wasn't a good means to redistribute them," said Air Force Capt. Michael J. Sander, MRT-1, officer in charge.

WASHINGTON — Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki discussed Iraq security issues when they met at the Pentagon Thursday afternoon.

Gates and Maliki addressed the U.S.-Iraqi security relationship and equipment needs for Iraqi Soldiers and Police, Pentagon spokesman Geoff Morrell said.

Their conversation, Morrell said, focused “largely on our security partnership, on ways that we can continue to help the Iraqi Security Forces grow in size and capability, so that they are able to fully exert their sovereignty and protect the people from external and internal threats.”

CAMP DWYER, Helmand Province, Afghanistan – What is needed to get through a combat deployment? Some might say the answer is perseverance, determination and motivation.

Two Marines with Regimental Combat Team 3, deployed here from 3rd Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment based in Okinawa, Japan, have gone out of their way to help bring a little bit of motivation to their fellow Marines and Sailors.

Afghan-International Security Force Pursues Taliban in Kandahar

KABUL, Afghanistan - A joint Afghan and international security force detained suspected militants during a search of a compound in Kandahar Province on Friday night.

The force searched the compound on the east side of the city after intelligence indicated militant activity. The search found evidence supporting the intelligence, including incriminating photographs. The compound is known to be frequented by a Taliban commander in charge of suicide bomber attacks in the region.

The charred remains of four American contractors hung - like trophies – over the Euphrates River. Crowds of Iraqis looked on, shouting: “Fallujah will be the graveyard of the Americans.” It was 2004 in Fallujah: Coalition forces had been forced to pull out of the city, and with an influx of foreign jihadists adding to the insurgent ranks, it had turned into an urban jungle. This was the situation on the ground facing then-Cpl. Robert Mitchell Jr. and his fellow Marines as they headed for Fallujah.

Mitchell, a member of Kilo Company, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, was on his second tour to Iraq when Coalition forces launched a joint US –Iraqi offensive to reclaim Fallujah from the insurgents who had fortified the city. Dubbed Operation Phantom Fury, the assault on Fallujah began on Nov. 8, 2004, and quickly turned into a blood, street-by-street contest with Mitchell and his fellow Marines stuck in the thick of fighting.

Day-by-day, Mitchell and his squad pushed through the city, clearing neighborhood by neighborhood. The Marine squad found themselves engaged in classic guerilla warfare, locating and eliminating strong pockets of enemy resistance. During an attack against an insurgent strong hold on Nov. 12, Mitchell was shot through the bicep; but Mitchell continued on, undeterred by the injury.

Airman 1st Class Colton Read is being treated there following complications from a July 9 surgery at the David Grant Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base, Calif., that resulted in the tragic amputation of both legs. 

The incident is currently under intense investigations.

BAGHDAD – The Emergency Response Brigade, along with U.S. force advisors, arrested two suspected terrorists during an intelligence-driven mission outside of Baghdad, July 22.

The elite police force was operating under the authority of a warrant issued by the Criminal Investigative Court of Karkh.

1LT Michael McCarty, Silver Star

First Lt. McCarty’s platoon was patrolling in the Adhamiyah district of Baghdad on Nov. 20, 2004, when a group of insurgents attacked. As the enemy fighters inflicted a massive assault on the 26-man team, McCarty directed a counterattack. At one point, McCarty charged and destroyed an enemy machine-gun team without any support. In all, his team stopped an enemy three-man machine-gun team and a force of about 75 insurgents. McCarty’s actions prevented the capture of an Iraqi police station. On Feb. 4, 2006, McCarty was awarded the Silver Star Medal. He was previously awarded the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal with Valor.

U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Release - COB SPEICHER — The Gulf Region Division, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers here began its transformation as part of the responsible drawdown of U.S. forces in Iraq when it discontinued two of its three subordinate districts and merged them into the Gulf Region district, July 20.

The Division’s Gulf Region North and Gulf Region Central districts became the newly-formed Gulf Region district. The new district, along with the division’s South district, will continue to provide full-spectrum construction management in support of the U.S. government and the government of Iraq.

JOINT BASE BALAD — Airmen and Soldiers here aided in fostering strong relationships with Iraqi citizens by preparing and delivering donations from a stateside fraternity to be given to Iraqi children who live near the base, July 14-15.

The Pennsylvania State University chapter of the social fraternity Phi Kappa Tau supports programs which increase the quality of life for terminally ill children. Through their program Kicks 4 Kids, along with some inquiring by Capt. Craig Bryan, Expeditionary Aeromedicine Squadron psychologist and PKT alumnus, they were able to collect approximately 300 soccer balls to be distributed to Iraqi children via the support of JBB service members.

FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA — Iraqi Police in Wasit province are now capable of sustaining their own training needs after coalition forces leave Iraq thanks to a coordinated effort between the Iraqi police advisor teams, 772nd Military Police Company and the Wasit IP Provincial Headquarters.

Then Spc. Ryan Martinette, a combat medic, reeled from the blast of an improvised explosive device at almost point-blank range. Regaining his senses, he picked up his medic's bag but found it drenched with blood.

That was a little over two years ago on the trash and debris-strewn streets of Baghdad, Iraq, where he and his unit happened upon a wounded Iraqi civilian and endured some rather anxious moments thereafter. The Medical Department Activity Soldier earned a Bronze Star with Valor for his actions in the summer of 2006. He was presented with it during a ceremony held Aug. 22, 2008, at Kenner Army Health Clinic, Fort Lee, Va., where he still works.

Maj. Gen. James E. Chambers, Combined Arms Support Command and Fort Lee commanding general, was on hand to present the award. He said combat medics put themselves in great danger to care for fellow Soldiers, and their value is often understated.

"Until you go to war, you don't know or appreciate who or what a medic is," Chambers said.

Martinette wanted to be a medic and wanted to go to war. He joined four years ago, knowing full well the country was engaged in a bloody terrorist conflict and the sacrifices he would have to make if he ever found himself on the battlefield.

7/24/2009 - SOUTHWEST ASIA (AFNS) -- What's the most important statistic of this war? Bombs dropped? Sorties flown? Territory secured? 

I'd argue the most important number of this war as of mid-July is this: 5,059. Unfortunately, this number is not static. It grows every day. It's the number of American service men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan since the commencement of Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Almost daily there's a solemn event that occurs in Southwest Asia. While many of us press through the rigors of long work days, trying to find time for sleep or a quick workout, there are men and women

SOUTHWEST ASIA — Coalition airpower integrated with coalition ground forces in Iraq and the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in the following operations, July 23, according to Combined Air and Space Operations Center officials here.

Near Lashkar Gah, Air Force A-10 Thunderbolt II's provided armed overwatch for friendly forces in a convoy. Enemy forces opened fire on the convoy with rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire. The A-10's strafed enemy positions numerous times, which stopped the enemy engagement on the convoy.

As we roll into another weekend, I've found no resolution to the debates on #MilitaryMon.  I believe in a joint effort, in teamwork, in consensus in the Spirit of the hashtag, not the individuals that are claiming glory of a tag.  I believe that spirit should demonstrate the same values as the Troops live by and fight by.

            The Department of Defense announced today the death of a Marine who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.

 

            Sgt. Ryan H. Lane, 25, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died July 23 of wounds suffered while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

BAGHDAD — U.S. Paratroopers showed Iraqi National Police medics Combat Lifesaving techniques during a day-long training event here on Joint Security Station Loyalty, July 22. The training exercise allowed Iraqi medics to hone their skills through several real-life scenarios.

LT John Finn, Medal of Honor, Pearl Harbor: Happy Birthday

Happy 100^th Mr. John Finn

On Dec 7^th 1941 many Heroes were made. John Finn is one of those men who received the Medal of Honor for his bravery on that day.  He says he doesn’t deserve it and simply holds it for all the others who fought and died that December day.  I disagree. On that Dec. Morning John held his position firing on the enemy for over two hours even though he himself had been hit 21 times. Several of his wounds serious.  Once the skies were quiet he sought medical help after being ordered to and then returned to help rearm the remaining airplanes at Kanoehe Bay.  Because Kanoehe was hit 5 minutes before Pearl Harbor many believe that John Finn is the first one to earn the Medal of Honor during WW2.  But when you sit and listen to his stories he will tell you of his men not of himself.  Even at 99 years old his mind is sharp and he loves to share his stories with those who will listen.

NINDS (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) is seeking persons with head injury for the Warfighter Head Injury Study, a comprehensive, multidisciplinary research evaluation.  The study will investigate the long-term difficulties war fighters may experience after combat. 

The evaluation includes non-invasive brain scan(s), a neurological examination, and neuropsychological testing.

Afghan-International Security Forces Search Taliban Compound in Ghazni

KABUL, Afghanistan - A joint Afghan and international security force searched a compound in Ghazni Province last night. The compound was used by a known Taliban facilitator responsible for supplying weapons and ammunition to local militants for attacks against Afghan and international security forces in the area.
