When Sgt. McDade and his platoon set out on an insurgent-clearing operation on Nov. 11, 2004, they knew that danger lurked around every corner. This was the battle of Fallujah, and this was urban combat. As they entered a narrow alley, the platoon came face to face with one of the most dangerous scenarios for a ground patrol: an ambush. Gunshots echoed in the alley--and three Marines were hit during the first salvo. The platoon was pinned down as heavy gunfire erupted around them. It was nearly impossible to reach the injured Marines--until Sgt. McDade ordered a machine-gun team into the alley to lay down cover fire. He then dashed into the alley multiple times and single-handedly pulled the three Marines out of the line of fire. One of the injured had been killed instantly, but, thanks to McDade’s quick response, the other two received immediate medical attention and survived. For his actions, McDade received the Navy Cross on Jan. 19, 2007.
