Operational Update, Sept. 27: Afghan-International Security Force Detains Militants in Kandahar; ISAF Service Member Deaths; Aircraft Incident
KABUL, Afghanistan – An Afghan and international security force detained several suspected militants today after searching a compound in Kandahar province, known to be used by a Taliban facilitator and his element.
The search was conducted near the village of Haji Mohammad Ewaz,
The operation was conducted without incident, and no Afghan civilians were harmed.
The Taliban uses an extensive network of supply routes in southern Afghanistan to arm and equip its militant elements. Afghan and international security forces are working together to block these routes and to ensure the safety and well-being of the Afghan people.
ISAF Casualties
In several separate incidents, three International Security Assistance Force service members died as a result of enemy activity in southern Afghanistan, and three ISAF service members died from a non-combat related incident in eastern Afghanistan in the last 24 hours.
The first of three incidents occurred Sept. 26. A U.S. service member died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated in southern Afghanistan. In another event in southern Afghanistan, a second U.S. service member died as a result of wounds suffered during an insurgent attack.
In eastern Afghanistan, three ISAF service members died in a non-combat related incident.
Today, an ISAF service member died from wounds caused by an improvised explosive device attack in southern Afghanistan.

Aircraft Incident
Recent media reports indicating that an ISAF aircraft was shot down by insurgent activity in northern Afghanistan are incorrect.
One ISAF unmanned aircraft did experience a hard landing near Konduz, but ISAF has recovered the aircraft without incident. No other ISAF aircraft have been lost during the last 24 hours.
ISAF is a key component of the international community's engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
