Afghan National Army, Police Get Pay Increases
Minister of the Interior H.E. Mohammad Hanif Atmar announced a salary increase of $45 a month for all police. This same increase is also applied to soldiers of the Afghan national army.
The ANP and the ANA will begin receiving longevity pay, which means service tenure will allow for salary increases throughout a police officer or soldier's career. The pay increase also includes provisions for combat pay in high-threat and medium-threat areas of the country, plus special pay for commandos, as
Atmar discussed growth of the Police and Army, and progress of the two forces in have made so far, "We have an Afghanistan that will be able to defend itself with its own national security forces."
MoI and MoD have growth-projection goals of 134,000 Soldiers and 96,800 Police by fall of 2010. The pay and benefit increases are expected to help achieve the goals of recruiting qualified candidates, while retaining career-tract police officers and soldiers.
"This will help improve recruiting, increase retention of those professionals in the force today, and it will also help reduce attrition," said Lt. Gen. William B. Caldwell, IV Commander NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan/Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan.
The pay chart includes adjustments for all uniformed ANA and ANP ranks from 2nd patrolman/soldier to general. For example under the new pay scale the monthly base salary for a new police officer or soldier starts at 8,250 Afghanis-or about $165 U.S.
