There is the saying "ignorance is bliss", which is just one small element of the problem. All the people mentioned in your piece from our President on down simply try to rationalize the irrational and just love to debate, discuss, 'create panels' etc., etc. Politicians love to talk. Just watch C-Span for thirty minutes or so. I wish I had could be a congress person because I would love to stand up all day and talk and talk and talk some more.
My HUGE pet peeve. This was not a 'foiled' or 'unsuccessful' attempt.... the objective of terrorism is to terrorize, right? So in reality...the 'panty' bomber did achieve his mission --he terrorized an large airliner full of innocent men, women and children..their families, and the country. ONLY, out of sheer luck (this time) the detonator malfunctioned and so the bickering and finger pointing and worse, the denials...continue. Make no mistake however, this was a test ... just as there have been others. The American people need to take their heads out of 'la la' land (e.g. Kate+8) and 'blab, blab, blab TV....instead of delegating the 'dirty work' and 'clean up' for our troops to handle.
One of my analogies re: Profiling...(Parents will relate to this) My two sons are 17 months apart. They have different personalities, one more mischievous and 'stealth', the other had more temper and was very stubborn. Did I deal with their transgressions exactly the same while they were growing up, heck no! Anybody who says they do are not being honest.
I had to deal with each differently, in a way that would be effective and produce positive results. I didn't have the luxury of standing for hours discussing childhood psychology and blame their Dad for something he didn't do or for the fact I didn't buy them enough candy the week before....No, when they both got into it, and it was obvious by what had transpired who ultimately was responsible for it...they suffered the consequences. It HAD to be that way! Was I ever wrong...and the wrong child received the punishment who had not been guilty? Of course...but 9 times out of 10 I was right! I could have been accused of being unfair but I never considered it as such.... it was simply a matter understanding and accepting the reality...and then concern myself with handling things as they needed to be. Simple as that. The ultimate results and my ultimate goal was to raise two good young men (which they turned out to be!).
Too many people in our society live at the trough of instant gratification...and since there is no 'quick fix' for terrorism...it isn't pleasant ... much more mundane than let's say, shopping, cocktail parties and global warming...we'd all wish it or THEY would go away... but girls and boys its not happening probably in our lifetime nor our kids'. Just ask the Israelis.
Terrorists don't give a rat's ass about our politics and the bickering, name calling (e.g. "CIA are liars"...). and while we (as a country) are all engaged in all this 'theater of the absurd'..the terrorists are observing, planning, testing, and will continue to strike.
