BAGHDAD – Iraqi Security Forces arrested a suspected al-Qaeda in Iraq (AQI) member believed to be responsible for numerous assassinations in and around Baghdad Thursday during a joint security operation conducted in a rural area located approximately 38 km southwest of Baghdad.
Intelligence reports indicate AQI terrorists are increasingly staging politically motivated assassinations and violent attacks in an attempt to undermine the Government of Iraq and create a sense of chaos as national elections near.
Iraqi Security Forces and U.S. advisors searched a residential building for the suspected assassin, who belongs to an AQI cell believed to have conducted nearly 50 assassinations. Evidence and information collected during the operation led ISF to identify and arrest the wanted individual and two suspected criminal accomplices.
Iraqi and U.S. forces conduct joint operations in accordance with the Security Agreement and in coordination with the Iraqi government to target terrorists seeking to disrupt the security and stability of Iraq.
