But what about Dick's Sporting Goods? Aside from the obvious: Troops enjoy sports in their downtime, some of the best gear for cold weather and tactical movements is actually hunting gear. I know of one sniper that swore by good ole Mossy Oak camo on his stalks. Of course he was training in the US Woodlands and was an avid hunter, but he never once mentioned making a ghillie suit. For troops in Afghanistan, more than in Iraq, the cold weather gear from a sporting gear may be of particular importance. For Troops, everywhere, a good pair of running shoes can be key.
A bicycle can be a hot commodity on a large FOB. Afghan kids have been exposed to Softball and basically any sport or exercise gear can be used to fill the downtime.

Then there's Dollar Tree. The price conscious know that Dollar Tree has better deals than most other stores. For the Angel sending care packages on a regular basis, this is a way to get your Warrior more bang for your buck. Conventional Wisdom says to send baby wipes, toothbrushes, and other toiletries found at Dollar Tree, but there is an abundance of these items at some locations while a shortage of common items such as notebooks or highlighters.
Talk to your Troop and you'll be able to tailor your package to that location. Always in demand are some type of microwavable meal. The military always has a power source and somehow Joe always finds a way to get a microwave and historically (though less so in modern days) a coffee pot. JC Whitney is an old name in Auto Parts and Accessories, particularly when it comes to hard to find accessories and the best prices for any part. I used to peruse their catalog as a kid and became a customer when I got my first $500.00 car. (Back in the day, that's what it cost for a road worthy used car that was perfect for a 16 year old that needed periodic experience learning how to make repairs.) I'm sure if I were deployed, I'd be able to find something in there that would be perfect for updating a Military Vehicle for a specific mission such as a coffee pot that runs on 12 or 24 volts DC. But this store can also be used by the car afficionado/Warrior when he returns.
