KABUL, Afghanistan - The Spanish Provincial Reconstruction Team recently completed a project planting pistachio trees where illegal drugs had been previously grown.
The project began in Badghis province last year and was completed through the efforts of the International Spanish Agency of Coordination and Development to support the province's economy.
The pistachio trees provide a profitable and productive alternative to illicit crops, and adapt to the extreme Afghan environment. Their care and administration will be the responsibility of local communities. The Spanish PRT will provide advice regarding the seeding and organically fertilizing along with technical advice regarding the tree´s growth.
Recently, members of the AECID and an Afghan agricultural engineer, escorted by Spanish units of the Legion Brigade, visited several new pistachio groves to supervise the work being done on 13 plantations in the Badghis region.
