UN Staff Member Killed in Afghan Attack
The UN in Afghanistan says its vehicles came under fire while at a busy traffic circle in Kabul
The United Nations says one of its staff members has been shot and killed in an attack in the Afghan capital. The U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan says its vehicles came under fire while at a busy traffic circle in Kabul Tuesday. Two Afghan staff members were in the vehicle at the time. The other employee was unharmed.
UNAMA said the circumstances of the shooting were unclear. The agency issued a statement condemning violence against "any of its personnel under any circumstances."
On the outskirts of the capital, an Afghan protest against NATO forces turned violent Tuesday, with at least 20 people injured in clashes with police.
Demonstrators took to the streets to protest what residents say was a NATO raid on a local madrassa, or religious school, in Qalacha late Monday. Protesters claim NATO forces entered the school with a search dog and arrested a number of people. But Afghan police officials say Afghan security personnel and not international troops were involved in the operation.
Five protesters and 15 police officers were injured in Tuesday's demonstration, with reports of shots being fired.
In southern Kandahar province, Afghan officials said two civilians were killed in a roadside bombing in Khakrez district Tuesday. Officials say six security guards were killed in an insurgent attack in neighboring Zabul province.
And in eastern Afghanistan, NATO said an Afghan-led joint force battled hundreds of insurgents in Kunar province for a third day. The militants are believed to be responsible for the June 7 roadside bombing that killed five U.S. soldiers.
Also Tuesday, NATO marked one year since a U.S. soldier disappeared in southeastern Paktika province. Taliban insurgents later released videos of the captured Bowe Bergdahl, demanding the release of prisoners in exchange for the soldier.
The military says finding Bergdahl and bringing him home safely is a top priority for U.S. and NATO forces.
