Paktiya Province
Afghan and coalition forces conducted operations in Paktiya province last night while in pursuit of a Taliban commander for coordinating and conducting indirect fire and direct fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The commander, Naman, also coordinated the movement of improvised explosive devices, ammunition, supplies and fighters. He was killed in the operation, along with seven other insurgents.
As the security force approached the targeted compounds west of Kowti Sheyl
Two additional armed insurgents ran in a different direction.
As the security force attempted to interdict them, the insurgents demonstrated hostile intent and were also killed. During a follow-on inspection, the security force found automatic weapons, grenades, magazines and IED-making material with the insurgents.
In the compound, four insurgents hid inside one of the buildings and engaged the force with a machine gun as they attempted to clear the building. The security force returned fire and killed the insurgents.
Inside the building, the security force found the machine gun, multiple automatic weapons, 16 grenades, 25 magazines, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with multiple rounds and a bayonet. They also found IED-making material including blasting caps and other components in the building.
After the fighting ceased, Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to peacefully exit the remainder of the buildings. After questioning the residents on scene, the security force detained several insurgents.
"The Taliban use callous and irresponsible tactics, which regularly puts the Afghan people in harm's way," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Afghan and coalition forces will do everything in their power to take those responsible off the streets and establish safe living conditions for the Afghan people."
The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.

Khost Province
Afghan and coalition forces captured a Haqqani Network commander involved in Saturday's attacks on Forward Operating Bases Salerno and Chapman in Khost province.
The security force also detained two additional insurgents during the operation.
Acting on intelligence tips, Afghan and coalition forces targeted a compound south of Bakhtanah in Sabari District to search for the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and then secured the area.
After questioning the residents at the scene, the security force detained the commander and two additional insurgents. The security force also found multiple automatic weapons at the scene.
Afghan and coalition forces killed more than 30 Haqqani Network insurgents, thwarting a planned attack in which at least 13 insurgents wearing suicide vests, attempted to storm FOBs Salerno and Chapman early Saturday. Additionally, Afghan and coalition forces recovered eight recoilless rifles and 26 grenades along with multiple automatic weapons and rocket-propelled grenades . There were no Afghan or coalition forces killed in the unsuccessful attack.
Following the attacks, coalition forces conducted a precision air strike on a vehicle occupied by three Haqqani Network fighters after they attempted to attack FOB Salerno. Mudasir, a Haqqani suicide bomber and improvised explosive device facilitator, was killed in the strike along with two additional insurgents. Mudasir, who is also known as Qari Ishaq, had direct ties to key Haqqani Network senior leadership based in Pakistan and was a teacher at a madrassa known to facilitate suicide bombers.
Afghan and coalition forces also successfully secured and destroyed a truck full of explosives, which was planned to be used as a vehicle-borne IED during the attack.
"Afghan and coalition forces easily thwarted every attempt by the Haqqani terrorists to infiltrate our bases. The Haqqani Network claims to be the most experienced insurgent group currently operating in Afghanistan, however, with the success of the Afghan and coalition offensive operations, it's apparent they lack the capability to influence the progress of the government of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "While it cost the insurgents an exorbitant amount of combat resources to conduct these attacks, the fighters were engaged and killed before they could even come close to executing their plans. On the other hand, coalition forces only lost a few hours of sleep and some bullets."
"We'll continue to pursue those responsible for these attacks and others like them," Torres continues. "In my opinion, these fighters should stop listening to their leaders, who are living comfortable lives across the border in Pakistan, lay down their weapons and re-integrate with GiRoA, before they are killed or captured in future attacks."

Afghan and Coalition forces killed more than 30 Haqqani Network insurgents, including 13 wearing suicide vests as they attempted to storm Forward Operating Bases Salerno and Chapman and government buildings in Khost Saturday morning. Mudasir, a Haqqani suicide bomber and improvised explosive device facilitator, was killed as he attempted to flee as the attack was smashed by ANSF and ISAF forces.
Overnight ANSF and ISAF forces capitalized on intelligence tips to capture a commander involved in planning the attacks. Yesterday's attack was the latest of several insurgent attempts to conduct spectacular attacks in the last several months. All of the attempts, including attacks in Jalalabad, Kandahar, Bagram and Kabul failed to achieve any significant operational effect.
"The insurgents' attempts to attack ISAF or Afghan government facilities were defeated again," said Brig. Gen. Josef Blotz, ISAF spokesman. "The insurgent leadership who direct these ill-conceived attacks far from the actual battlefield knows their low-level fighters have no chance of success against these targets."
Since May 2010, there have been five failed insurgent attacks on ISAF or Afghan government targets garnering significant attention resulting in dozens of insurgents captured or killed. Additionally, the insurgents attempted and failed to disrupt President Karzai's Peace Jirga and the Kabul Conference, causing the death, injury or capture of their own fighters. Previous attacks on ISAF bases in Bagram, Kandahar, and Jalalabad all met with similar results as ISAF and ANSF service members repulsed the insurgents.
The May 18 attack on Bagram, the May 22nd attack on Kandahar, and the June 30 attack of FOB Fenty near Jalalabad resulted in over 30 insurgents being captured or killed. None of the attacks breached the defense barriers of the bases.
"The only thing these attacks prove is the lack of regard for the lives of low-level fighters by their insurgent leaders," said Blotz. "Lower level insurgents would do well to take advantage of President Karzai's offer to enable them to lay down their arms and reintegrate into Afghan society with honor."
Kunduz Province
A coalition force air strike was conducted against a senior Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan commander who facilitates foreign fighters and leads attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Kunduz Saturday.
The commander has a standing relationship with senior Taliban members in Kunduz and his fighters are integrated with Taliban fighters in the area.
Intelligence tracked three armed insurgents traveling on a motorcycle south of Mang Tapa in Chahar Darah District. After verifying insurgent activity and ensuring no civilians were present, coalition aircraft engaged the insurgents. Coalition forces did not dispatch a follow-on ground force, but assessed the air strike killed at least one insurgent and wounded another.
"These operations disrupt the multiple insurgent groups collaborating in Afghanistan who have no intention of establishing stability, security and a legitimate governance. They only bring indiscriminate violence to the Afghan people," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Afghan and coalition forces are conducting these operations in order to help bring the peace to the people of Afghanistan deserve."
No civilians were injured or killed in this operation.

Relatives of Manan attempted to take him to a Herat hospital, but Manan died from his injuries on the way.

Logar Province
Afghan and coalition security forces captured Zia Ul-Haq, a senior Taliban commander operating in Logar province and responsible for the facilitation of foreign fighters and suicide bombers into Kabul City, during an operation Wednesday.
The security force also captured a Taliban sub-commander responsible for planning and coordinating attacks during the operation.
Zia Ul-Haq had replaced Ghulam Sakhi who was killed during an Afghan and coalition force operation in June. Sakhi tried to hide amongst a group of women and children disguised in women's attire, and was killed after he brandished a pistol and a grenade and shot at the security force.
The assault force targeted a series of compounds in Pul-e 'Alam District in pursuit of the commander. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit each of the compounds peacefully, and then secured the areas. After questioning all of the residents at the scenes, the security force identified and detained Zia Ul-Haq, the sub-commander and an additional insurgent.
"We've focused our attention on the insurgent networks operating in Logar," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Since the beginning of the month, several Taliban leaders have been captured and an additional two were killed during these operations. Afghan and coalition forces are removing these dangerous individuals off the streets to help bring peace and security to the
Afghan people."
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
Helmand Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained more than 10 suspected insurgents during a combined operation to detain a senior Taliban commander Aug. 20.
During subsequent questioning from Afghan and coalition forces, an alleged Taliban judge was discovered to be among the group of insurgents detained.
One of the detainees, Mullah Sazuddin, is an alleged senior Taliban judge for Gereshk District, Helmand province. He is known by locals as the "Taliban Death Decider," and has been reported to preach anti-government and anti-coalition rhetoric.
Detainees stated it is common for him to declare infidels allied to the government of Afghanistan should be killed and local Afghans and Taliban should kill anyone who takes so much as a 'stick of candy' from the International Security Assistance Force.
During questioning by Afghan and coalition forces, Sazuddin admitted to being a Taliban judge. Other detainees affirmed that Taliban officials would bring local Afghan citizens before the Mullah to be tried for violating Taliban law.
"The jury is in, the judge is out and justice has been served," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "We've just abolished part of an illegal justice system in this country."
