The COMREL was part of a four-day port visit to strengthen U.S. relationship with the local community.
During the COMREL, Mohawk’s crew built a cooking structure, installed plumbing, erected a tire swing and gave out footballs, soccer balls and frisbees.
"This crew never ceases to amaze me,” said Cmdr. Robert Hendrickson, commanding officer of Mohawk. “This community relations project is just one more instance where they have exceeded my wildest expectations. The cooking shelter they erected at the Christian Faith Rescue Orphanage, along with the numerous other projects they completed, is a great example of the Mohawk crew's dedication to helping people in need.”
Mohawk pulled into Freetown, Aug. 7, following the completion of three weeks at sea working with Sierra Leone Law Enforcement Detachments and vessels from the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces Maritime Wing. During that time they worked together enforcing national maritime laws and regulations in the exclusive economic zone areas off the coast of Sierra Leone.
Mohawk, a medium endurance cutter, is homeported out of Key West, Fla., and is on a scheduled deployment in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of responsibility.
