South African Group Seeks Court Ban on Bible Burning Protest
VoA News: A South African Muslim organization Friday asked the courts to prevent a local man from burning Bibles in retaliation for threats by a U.S. pastor to burn the Quran.
Mohammed Vawda said he became “infuriated and outraged” by the U.S. pastor’s plans to mark the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a mass Quran burning. The pastor has since suspended his planned protest.
If the courts agree, Omar says Vawda would be arrested for following through on his threat.
A spokeswoman for another Islamic organization says burning the Bible is contrary to Muslim teachings. She said her group is “very, very disappointed” by Vawda’s threat and will be discussing it with him directly.
