News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command regarding operations conducted in the following provinces: Kunduz, Paktiya, Khost, Helmand, Badghis and Kandahar.
More than 200 Afghan soldiers from various Afghan Security Force elements in Kandahar joined forces with soldiers of Special Operations Task Force - South to clear portions of the Arghandab River Valley Friday.
The operation netted 54 improvised explosive devices which were destroyed in place. The combined force also found two compounds rigged with homemade explosives, which were destroyed.
"We will continue to find and destroy IEDs which kill and harm innocent civilians," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
Kunduz Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents in overnight operations in Kunduz and Khost provinces, targeting Haqqani and Taliban leaders Saturday.
In northern Kunduz province, a separate security force detained three suspected insurgents while targeting a Taliban mid-level leader for the Gor Tapa area. He leads attacks in Kunduz City using foreign fighters, and is associated with Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leaders in the area.
After the Afghan-led call out, the joint security force cleared and secured the compound. After initial questioning of the residents at the scene, the security force detained the suspected insurgents.
The security force did not fire their weapons during either operation and they protected the women and children for the duration of the searches.
Paktiya Province
An insurgent-placed improvised explosive device killed nine Afghan civilians, including women and children, when the vehicle they were traveling in struck the device in the Zurmat District of Paktiya province Oct. 10.
According to initial reports, among the dead are three young children, three women, and several other adults.
"The Taliban have complete disregard for innocent women and children - we condemn their indiscriminant killing in the strongest terms," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Our thoughts and concerns are with the families of those killed. We'll work with our Afghan partners to find those responsible for this attack and bring them to justice."

An Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban mid-level leader, who conducted improvised explosive device attacks and facilitated IED materials, during an operation in Paktiya province Saturday.
Intelligence information led the security force to a compound south of the village of Alijan Kheyl in Zurmat District. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the targeted compound peacefully and then the joint security force cleared and secured the compound.
After initial questioning of the residents at the scene, the security force identified and detained the targeted individual along with two of his associates.
The security force did not fire their weapons and they protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
Khost Province
A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device exploded near an International Security Assistance Force mounted patrol in eastern Afghanistan, resulting in one Afghan child killed and two wounded, Sunday.
The wounded children were evacuated to an ISAF medical facility.
The vehicle-borne IED attack, which occurred in Manduzai District, Khost province, resulted in one ISAF vehicle lightly damaged.
"The killing and wounding of innocent children is reprehensible," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "Our thoughts and concerns are with the families of the dead and wounded children. We'll work with our Afghan partners to find those responsible for planning this attack and bring them to justice."

In Khost province, Afghan and coalition forces continued tracking a Haqqani Network mid-level leader overnight, detaining two suspected insurgents without incident. The targeted individual coordinates and conducts attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces.
Intelligence information led the security force to a compound in the village of Lewan Kheyl in Sabari
District to search for the targeted individual. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, and then the joint security force cleared and secured the compound.
After initial questioning at the scene, the security force detained two suspected insurgents. The security force also discovered and destroyed multiple weapons, a blasting cap, explosives and military uniforms at the scene.

Helmand Province
Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance forces raided a suspected Taliban headquarters compound in Maiwand District, Helmand province, Saturday.
Multiple intelligence sources led the patrol to the suspected Taliban headquarters, which is the base of operations for a Taliban leader responsible for commanding multiple insurgent cells made up of approximately 300 fighters.
Afghans used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound and then began to clear the buildings within the compound.
While clearing the compound, the ANSF and ISAF patrol took fire from armed individuals inside and outside the compound. The security force returned fire, killing several insurgents. The security force also detained several suspected insurgents.
During a search of the compound, the combined force found approximately 30 pressure-plate improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades, RPG launchers, several AK-47s, medical equipment, suicide IED vests, and items normally used in command and control activities.
The weapons and explosives were destroyed in place.

An Afghan and coalition security force killed Ajmal Agha Jan, a Taliban senior leader highly skilled in the construction of improvised explosive devices and who was responsible for the emplacement of IEDs throughout Helmand province, during an overnight operation in the province.
The security force also captured a Taliban mid-level leader who participated and directed attacks in the Sistani area of Marjah District. He led up to 20 fighters and facilitated their materials.
Intelligence information led the security force to a series of compounds in Marjah district. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the targeted compound peacefully and then the joint security force cleared the compound.
After initial questioning of the residents at the scene, the security force identified and detained the Taliban leader along with two of his associates.
During the search, Ajmal Agha Jan threatened the security force with a pistol. The security force engaged, killing him. Additionally, the security force found a grenade at the scene.
The security force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.

Afghan national security and International Security Assistance Forces came under fire by insurgents while conducting a dismounted patrol in Sangin district of Helmand province Oct. 10.
Insurgents used small arms and rocket-propelled grenades in the attack. The combined force identified the insurgent firing position and returned fire.
During the ensuing fire fight, the combined force called in air support to suppress the enemy fire. The resulting close air support and combined force fire fight, killed more than 15 insurgents.
Initial reports indicate that all rounds were observed striking their intended target, causing no damage to local buildings and no civilian casualties.

Badghis Province
Afghan and coalition forces killed Mullah Jamaluddin Saturday, reportedly one of the possible candidates to become the new shadow governor for Badghis province after the former, Mullah Ismail, was killed Wednesday in a joint operation.

The Afghan and coalition force's deliberate campaign to disrupt Taliban operations in Badghis and neighboring Faryab provinces has resulted in six Taliban senior leaders killed, including the shadow governors for Badghis and Faryab provinces, and one captured, during several operations over the last two weeks.
"The Taliban has unsuccessfully attempted to establish illegal, shadow governments in northern Afghanistan," said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director. "These operations are significantly reducing Taliban influence throughout the region and returning it to the people of Afghanistan and the legitimate government they elected."
Intelligence sources tracked Mullah Jamaluddin traveling in Morghab District. Three armed individuals threatened the security force during the operation. The security force responded, killing Mullah Jamaluddin and his two accomplices. After the area was secure, the security force searched the area and positively identified Mullah Jamaluddin.
Kandahar Province
