Iran Restricts Academic Courses It Deems ‘Western’
VOA News Sunday, October 24th, 2010 Iran has imposed restrictions on university disciplines deemed to be too “Western.”
A senior Education Ministry official told Iranian media Sunday that universities will not be permitted to open new departments in 12 social sciences, including human rights and women’s studies.

Other subjects affected by the restrictions include law, management, psychology, philosophy and political science.
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has urged officials to consider modifying subjects he says could lead to religious doubts.
Government enrollment statistics show about 2 million out of Iran’s 3.5 million university students are studying humanities and social sciences.
Earlier this month, Ayatollah Khamenei declared that the financial endowment of the country’s largest private university was religiously illegitimate and unlawful.
The ruling paves the way for a state takeover of Islamic Azad University, an institution seen as a power center for the nation’s moderate reform movement.
