Tajikistan has been on high alert following a series of recent attacks that the government blames on Islamist militants.
The military is engaged in a combat operation in the Rasht Valley — about 75 kilometers from the Afghan border — following last month’s militant ambush on a military convoy that killed 28 soldiers.
The Central Asian nation is a majority-Muslim country and the poorest nation to emerge from the collapse of the Soviet Union nearly two decades ago.
