VOA News Wednesday, November 10th, 2010 The U.S. Defense Department is indicating that an aircraft was responsible for the vapor trail seen in the California sky on Monday.
In a statement Wednesday, a top Pentagon official, Colonel Dave Lapan, said there is no evidence to suggest that the vapor trail is anything other than a condensation trail from an aircraft.
A Los Angeles, California television station broadcast an unidentified object Monday leaving a large vapor trail as it traveled in the sky. Witnesses estimate the object appeared to be about 56 kilometers out to sea, west of Los Angeles.
The Defense Department said there were no missile or rocket launches reported at the time from that area, and officials determined there was no threat to the United States.

Other sources quote Colonel Dave Lapan as having said
"I don't know specifically what they are all doing. I just know they have been pinged and that we are talking to the FAA, we are talking to other parts of the U.S. government. We are trying to do everything we can to figure out if anybody has any knowledge of what this event may have been," Lapan said in off-camera comments to journalists.
"So far we have come up empty," he added.
Also quoted was FAA spokesman Ian Gregor saying
"The FAA ran radar replays of a large area west of Los Angeles based on media reports of the possible missile launch at approximately 5 p.m. (PT) on Monday. The radar replays did not reveal any fast moving, unidentified targets in that area," said FAA spokesman Ian Gregor. "The FAA did not receive reports ... of unusual sightings from pilots who were flying in the area on Monday afternoon.
"The FAA did not approve any commercial space launches around the area Monday," he added.
WOTN Editor's Note: Sometimes the answer seems impossible. In this case, I would not have believed it were an airplane were it not for the work of someone far smarter than me in mathematics and photography. He was the first to present sufficient proof that it could and probably is the Hawaii to Phoenix flight: http://uncinus.wordpress.com/2010/11/09/4/#more-4
