Afghans rebuild road through critical pass in Oruzgan
CJSOTF-A: Afghan villagers rebuilt a critical passageway through a canyon; reconnecting the villages of Hesar and Gharam Oct. 27 in Deh Rawod district, Oruzgan province. The Afghan workers received wages and project guidance from U.S. Special Forces during the rebuilding.
This critical road project linked Afghan farmers, living north of the canyon, to the only bazaar where they are able to sell their crops and to purchase needed goods.
Several years ago Afghan villagers, under the supervision of the Taliban, built the original trail through the canyon, but were not paid for their work. The Taliban then destroyed the trail to purposely isolate the villages on either side.
The old trail is now a road, capable of handling both foot and vehicular traffic. The barriers, filled with gravel, dirt and rocks, fill two roles; expanding the surface area of the original trail and protecting the new road from the river that parallels it.
