Somali Pirate Gets 30 Years for Attack on US Navy Vessel
A Federal District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, sentenced Jama Idle Ibrahim to 30 years on charges of attack to plunder a vessel, an act of violence against persons on a vessel, and use of a firearm during a crime of violence.
Ibrahim pleaded guilty to those charges in August. Both prosecution and defense agreed at that time that 30 years was an appropriate sentence.
Ibrahim was one of six Somalis accused of the April 2010 attack on the USS Ashland, which they mistook for a merchant ship. He is expected to cooperate in the case against his five co-defendants.
U.S. Attorney Neil MacBride told reporters it was the first sentencing for piracy in Norfolk in more than 150 years.
