Two Afghan children were killed and one wounded in an improvised explosive device blast in Panjwayi District, Kandahar province, today.
An Afghan National Army and International Security Assistance Force patrol responded to the scene of the blast to investigate the incident. The wounded child was treated on site by ISAF medical personnel.
“The kids in this country are innocent witnesses to insurgent acts of terror and it’s a shame they are continuously on the wrong end of these indiscriminate attacks,” said U.S. Army Col. Rafael Torres, ISAF Joint Command’s Combined Joint Operations Center director. “Our thoughts and concerns are with the victims’ families. We’ll work with our Afghan partners to find those responsible for these attacks and bring them to justice. The people of Afghanistan deserve opportunity to live in a country that’s free of the destruction caused by IEDs.”

As the security force approached the compounds, the security force encountered insurgents on two separate occasions. The assault force shot and killed four armed insurgents after they threatened the security force. An inspection of the engagement areas confirmed all the insurgents were armed with either an automatic weapon or pistol, and multiple hand grenades.
