ISAF Joint Command 11.02.2010 KABUL, Afghanistan – Approximately 250 Ghazni women recently completed six-month domestic and academic classes offered by the Ghazni Provincial Reconstruction Team.
The classes, led by the Forward Operating Base Ghazni PRT, were in wool spinning and reading, writing and mathematics teaching.
The wool-spinning class began April 18 and was conducted in 10 villages in the northern part of Qara Bagh district.
"The main objective of the project was to sell spun wool, so that the participants during the project could start making money,” said Katarzyna Wojtusik, PRT specialist responsible for the project.
Fifteen tons of raw wool were used during the class and nearly 12 tons of wool were sold. On average, 7 kilograms of wool suitable for use can be obtained from every 10 kg of raw material. The spun wool is then dyed and sold to individual customers or businesses, such as carpet dealers.
Ten teachers were employed to run the second course – reading, writing and mathematics.
Classes were conducted three to four hours a day, five days a week for six months.
Teachers used a variety of texts on topics ranging from nutritional properties of vegetables most frequently consumed by the Afghans, insect types, infectious diseases, drinking water hygiene, and concluding with human rights, the institution of marriage and the economy.
"It appeared that the contents are transmitted to broaden the horizons of participants by preparing them for possibly more specialized training such as in the field of animal husbandry, hygiene, processed fruits, etc.," said Wojtusik.
