The Silver Star, the Nation's third-highest award is worn by Sgt. Williams W. Rollins. Rollins was awarded the Silver Star for his heroic actions in Afghanistan. During a reconnaissance patrol to the village of Dowlatabad, enemy fighters ambushed Rollins' squad with a high volume of machine gun and rocket propelled grenade fire from multiple prepared positions. With the majority of his squad pinned down by the accurate enemy fires, Rollins rushed to within 30 meters of the enemy positions, and in the face of almost certain death, provided suppressive fire which allowed his men to escape the immediate ambush area, according to the official awards citation. This image was taken on Op Herrick IV, the UK's deployment into Helmand Province of Southern Afghanistan. Op Herrick IV has seen the development of the Helmand Task Force in the province, which has seen the cross Governmental Provincial Reconstruction Team set up in Lashkar Gar, to help the Afghan Government build strong governmental institutions, security and create jobs. The Task Force is made up of 3300 troops from the British Military, with the majority being taken from 16 Air Assault Brigade.

DIWAR, Afghanistan (Dec. 18, 2010) Active duty and reserve component Seabees assigned to Naval Mobile Construction Battalions 40 and 18 secure and fortify a combat outpost in Diwar, Afghanistan. The Seabees continued working despite a suicide car bombing that killed six Soldiers at the site seven days before. The combined efforts by joint forces will restrict movement of Taliban insurgents and help secure self-governing efforts in Afghanistan. Plans are to provide troops in Afghanistan with a new generation of Light Protected Patrol Vehicle (LPPV). The LPPV has been designed to provide unprecedented levels of blast protection for a vehicle of its size, and will be able to carry a crew of up to six people. It will add to the wide array of protected vehicles already being used on operations in Afghanistan, including Mastiff and Ridgeback.

This followed a prolonged contact with Taliban fighters which saw the enemy attack from various positions on both sides of a river in Helmand, Afghanistan during Operation Panchai Palang 2 (Panthers Claw). Soldiers of 2 Company, 1 Battalion Welsh Guards (2 Coy 1WG), had been occupying a compound overlooking Checkpoint Yellow 7, a volatile bridge crossing, when the engagement occurred.
