26 January 2011 VOA News Germany is asking U.S. authorities in Afghanistan to grant its diplomats access to an imprisoned German citizen.
Germany's foreign ministry confirmed Wednesday is in U.S. custody in Afghanistan and that German officials are trying to get in contact with him.
The German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung reported the prisoner is a 23-year-old Afghan-German student from Frankfurt who was arrested by U.S. forces at his father's house in Kabul earlier this month.
It is not clear why he is being held.
Germany has said it has solid evidence of many nationals going to the Pakistan-Afghanistan border to receive military training from Islamic militant groups.
