Monday, January 3rd, 2011 VOA News The U.S. Navy said Sunday it is investigating reports of “inappropriate” videos produced on the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Enterprise.
A report in Saturday's edition of the Virginian-Pilot newspaper said the videos, shown to the carrier's crew of 6,000, included scenes of women pretending to shower together and officers using gay slurs, among other things.
Sailors told the Pilot that the executive officer of the ship at the time, Owen Honors, produced and starred in the videos in 2006 and 2007. Honors is now the captain of the Enterprise.
A Navy spokesman said the Navy does not endorse or condone these kinds of actions.
H/T to This Ain't Hell for finding the video. I may still go looking for the complete version, but this will allow you to think about things.
Surprises: Sailors: swearing like sailors, dressing in drag, and making fun of their situation.
Ok, the real surprise is that the XO isn't a salty old NCO. Officers aren't supposed to have a sense of humor, aren't supposed to be risking their careers over politically incorrect humor, and certainly not supposed to video tape the evidence that they care more about sailor morale than future investigations. Officers are simply not supposed to demonstrate they're humans.
And just think about the homophobia exhibited by these male sailors who were actually in showers together, soaping up their buddy, on video.
(BTW: there's a reason I never seriously considered joining the Navy)
