“Taliban insurgents continue to put the citizens of Afghanistan in harm by hiding in villages where they are not welcome; they open fire on Afghan and coalition forces in populated areas, putting innocent civilians at risk,” said Lt. Col. Patrick Hynes, International Security Assistance Force Joint Command Combined Joint Operations Center director.
Large narcotic and weapon caches were discovered by International Security Assistance Force during separate clearing operations in eastern Afghanistan today.

In Ghazni and Khost provinces, patrols discovered two weapons caches in Ghazni and Terayzai Districts. The cache consisted of 24 82 mm mortar rounds, five AK-47s, 23 AK-47 magazines and 800 7.62 mm rounds.
An Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol found four improvised explosive devices near a school in Kunduz province.
Nangarhar Province
An ISAF patrol found a drug cache in Sherzad District consisting of 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) of heroin, 110 gallons (416 litres) of chemicals, 160 pounds (72 kg) of soda ash, 10 gallons (37 litres) of ammonia and several drug processing kits.
In the same area, ISAF also discovered a weapons cache during a separate clearing operation consisting of 12 rocket-propelled grenades, one RPG launcher, two AK-47s, 12 AK-47 magazines and one bag of ammonium nitrate.

Helmand Province
An Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol targeted a senior Taliban leader during an operation in Musa Qal’ah District, Helmand province today.
The target has commanded approximately 300 fighters and coordinated weapons and improvised explosive device components to Taliban cells in Sangin.
After Afghan forces performed a call-out to give the occupants of the compound a chance to exit the area peacefully, they began clearing the buildings in the compound.
During the search, five women and 11 children were separated and protected.
After seeing the joint force moving towards him, one man ducked into a nearby building and emerged with a rifle. He attempted to engage the force and was killed. Another man offered to help the force search a room and while they were searching, pulled a handgun from underneath a mattress. He attempted to engage the force and was killed.
Two men were detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
Khost Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani Network facilitator who operates in the Terayzai District along with several other suspected insurgents during a security operation in Khost province yesterday.
The detained Haqqani Network facilitator was responsible for the movement of improvised explosive device materials in addition to coordinating IED emplacement within the province. He was associated with several other Haqqani Network facilitators in the area. Recent reporting indicates he coordinated and planned an attack against an Afghan school with a suicide vehicle-borne IED.
The security force followed intelligence tips to the potential compound of the insurgent. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the building. After the area was secure, the security force conducted initial questioning at the scene before detaining the targeted insurgent and additional suspected insurgents.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.

Kunduz Province
An Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol found four improvised explosive devices near a school in Kunduz province.
After identifying the IEDs, a combined patrol conducted a disposal operation to make the school area safe. The controlled detonation caused minor damages to the school because one of three devices consisted of 300 pounds (136 kg) of homemade explosives and it was not safe to move it. ISAF will pay for repairs.

Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents in Kunduz province as they targeted a Taliban leader during a joint security operation yesterday.
Recently promoted to the role of area attack leader for Gor Tapa District, the targeted insurgent makes improvised explosive devices and suicide vests, leads a group of Taliban fighters and employs anti-aircraft weapons against Afghan and coalition forces. He also works closely with Taliban shadow governors in the area planning attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Wardak Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban logistics officer who reports to the deputy shadow governor for Wardak province, killing several armed insurgents during a joint security operation yesterday.
The targeted insurgent is in direct contact with the Kabul province Taliban leader and the Nerkh District Taliban leader. Recent reporting indicates he was to receive ammunition from an associate to be used for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The joint security force followed intelligence reports to a compound in Nerkh District of Wardak province where Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully.
While clearing the area, the force received gunfire from armed insurgents and returned fire, killing several insurgents. The force recovered multiple weapons to include a machine gun, AK-47s, grenades, chest racks, blasting caps and ammunition.
While securing the compound, security forces discovered an Afghan child was wounded. A coalition medical technician provided immediate first aid. Coalition forces evacuated the child, escorted by a family member, to a coalition hospital within minutes of being injured. The child would later succumb to the wound received during the engagement.
