War in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces: Helmand, Paktika, Logar, Khost, Wardak, Ghazni, Kandahar and Kunduz.
One Afghan civilian was killed and six others were seriously wounded, including two children, in an insurgent attack in Kandahar Province.
In Logar, Kunar and Helmand Provinces, ISAF patrols discovered four improvised explosive device component and weapon caches in Baraki Barak, Nurgal and Nahr-e Saraj Districts. The caches consisted of seven hand grenades, one Russian grenade, six fuses, one RPG motor, 110 pounds (50 kilograms) of explosives, 36 recoilless rifle rounds, one AK47 and 40 40 mm rounds.

Helmand Province
In Helmand province, two insurgents were killed by ISAF in Nahr-e Saraj District today.
During a patrol, coalition forces were engaged by several insurgents with small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces returned fire and called for air support. The air weapons team on scene engaged the enemy position, killing the insurgents.
Paktika Province
During a separate insurgent attack against an ISAF forward operating base, one Afghan civilian was seriously wounded in Bermal District, Paktika province. Afghan Army and ISAF did not return fire in order to provide medical assistance for the wounded who was subsequently evacuated to an ISAF medical treatment facility.
Logar Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban facilitator and improvised explosive device expert during a security operation in Logar province yesterday.
The detained Taliban facilitator was responsible for operations involving IED attacks and ambushes against Afghan National Army and coalition forces within the Baraki Barak District. He has direct contact with Taliban leaders in the province.
The security force followed intelligence tips to the targeted compound of the Taliban facilitator in Baraki Barak District. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the security force cleared and secured the building.
After the area was secure, the security force conducted initial questioning at the scene before detaining the targeted Taliban facilitator. During questioning the detained facilitator led the security force to a second compound where they detained a suspected insurgent involved in weapons facilitation.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
Khost Province
Afghan Border Police and ISAF forces found two vehicles transporting explosives and a weapons cache in Gurbuz district, Khost province today. The cache consisted of a bag full of homemade explosives, 98 blasting caps and several loose 9 mm rounds. Coalition forces also detained several suspected insurgents related to the cache.

Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani Network leader who operates in the Sabari District, along with several other suspected insurgents during a security operation in Khost province yesterday.
The detained Haqqani Network leader was responsible for coordinating attacks against coalition forces and supplies Haqqani fighters with weapons, ammunition and equipment. He works closely with numerous other Sabari-based Haqqani Network operatives.
The security force followed intelligence tips to the suspected compound of the Haqqani leader. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the building.
After the area was secured, the security force conducted initial questioning at the scene before detaining the targeted leader and additional suspected insurgents. The security force found a machine gun with a large amount of ammunition, a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with rounds and multiple AK-47s.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.

Wardak Province
Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader who has connections with other Taliban leaders throughout Sayyidabad District during a security operation in Wardak province yesterday.
The detained Taliban leader is a liaison to a commission comprised of senior Taliban members who govern leaders and sub-leaders throughout the district. Reporting indicates that Taliban personalities operating in the district respect their approval process and adhere to their demands.
Forces followed leads to the target location, where Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The security team identified and detained the targeted leader based on initial questioning at the scene.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation.
Ghazni Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban weapons facilitator, detaining several suspected insurgents, during a joint security operation in Ghazni province yesterday.
The Taliban weapons facilitator is involved in selling pistols, heavy machine guns and other weapons systems to the Taliban in Rashidan District. He is also associated with two top Taliban leaders in the area.
Security forces followed leads to a series of buildings in the Rashidan District. Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call occupants out of the buildings peacefully before conducting a search of the compound. The suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning.
No women or children were injured or detained during this operation and the security force conducted the operation without firing their weapons.

Kandahar Province
An Afghan family was hit by a grenade thrown by insurgents in Zharay District. Afghan National Army, with the support of International Security Assistance Forces, tried to locate the insurgents who fled the area.

Coalition forces targeted a Taliban improvised explosive device facilitator with a precision air strike in Kandahar province yesterday, killing three armed insurgents.
The targeted Taliban facilitator is responsible for coordinating, preparing and supplying insurgents for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Zharay District. The facilitator is associated with multiple Taliban leaders including the Kandahar deputy shadow governor.
The air strike occurred as the targeted Taliban facilitator and another insurgent were identified in a remote area mid-morning in Zharay District. The insurgent was killed in the strike but the targeted facilitator ran to a nearby compound and gathered local Afghans around him, including a child, to deter further attacks.
Forces waited until the Taliban facilitator was clear of local citizens before calling in a second air strike where he was located with four armed insurgents in an open field. Two armed insurgents were killed and initial reports indicate there were no civilian casualties or damage done to buildings. The remaining suspects dispersed in retreat before forces could arrive at the scene.
On Dec. 22, security forces conducted a joint operation to detain this same Taliban facilitator for his role in the suicide vehicle-borne IED attack in Sangsar Dec. 12. Afghan and coalition forces detained several individuals and discovered 20 pounds of black-tar heroin in the previous operation.
Additional reporting indicates that he also led a group of Taliban insurgents attacking an Afghan and coalition patrol on Dec. 30. No Afghan or coalition casualties resulted from the attack.
The International Security Assistance Force is still gathering information to confirm if the Taliban facilitator was the one of the insurgents killed in the strike.

Kunduz Province
Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban leader in the Shin Wari area of Kunduz province, detaining numerous suspected insurgents and killing several armed insurgents during an operation yesterday.
The Taliban leader emplaces improvised explosive devices and distributes funds and weapons to Taliban leadership. He maintains ties with several senior Taliban leaders responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Intelligence report led the security force to the targeted compound where Afghan forces used a loudspeaker to call for all occupants to exit the compound.
Several of the women informed the security force that there were three armed insurgents in the building. The security force attempted to call out the armed insurgents and they did not comply.
After several attempts, the security force escalated their call out procedures before entering the building resulting in three heavily armed insurgents being killed. The security force recovered machine guns, AK-47s, shotguns and chest racks.
The security force indentified three insurgents attempting to evade and followed them to a compound where the insurgents sought refuge. As the security force approached the compound, the three armed insurgents fired upon the force. The force returned fire, killing two of the armed insurgents. After the compound was secure numerous suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene and their involvement in insurgent activities.
The assault force protected the women and children for the duration of the search.
