War in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces: Wardak, Helmand, Parwan, Kunar and Kandahar.
Afghan national security forces and ISAF found three weapons and drugs caches in Kapisa, Kandahar and Helmand provinces during separate combined clearing operations in Tagab, Panjwai and Garm Ser districts. In Nangarhar, Ghazni and Paktika provinces, ISAF patrols discovered weapons, improvised explosive device making components and drug caches in Sherzad, Muqer, Deh Yak and Omnah districts.
The caches consisted of nine rocket-propelled grenades, one AK-47, one pistol, 350 7.62 mm rounds, six blasting caps, one radio and 500 pounds (250 kilograms) of narcotics. Other caches consisted of two AK-47s, one heavy machine-gun tripod, eight full 7.62 mm magazines, two 82 mm mortar rounds, one 105 mm artillery shell, 200 7.62 mm rounds, 13 hand grenades, one Chinese grenade, some loose 9 mm rounds and 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of marijuana.

Wardak Province
In Wardak province, an ISAF forward operating base received a tip from an Afghan civilian that led coalition forces to a weapons cache in Maidan Shahr district. The cache consisted of seven grenades and 69 fuses.
Initial reports indicate no civilians were injured and no damage was reported during the clearing operations. The weapons, IED making components and drugs from all provinces were confiscated and will be destroyed.
Helmand Province
In Sangin district, Helmand province, during a base security operation, a combined patrol spotted several insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device. After gaining positive identification, combined forces engaged the enemy position, killing and wounding several insurgents.
Parwan Province
Three Afghan children were injured by an anti-personnel mine planted by insurgents, while playing in Bagram district, Parwan province, Jan. 8.
The wounded children were evacuated to a local hospital for medical treatment.

Kunar Province
Coalition forces targeted an al-Qaida-associated Taliban leader with a precision air strike in Kunar province yesterday, killing several suspected insurgents.
The targeted leader is an active attack planner who leads at least 25 fighters. Additionally, he maintains close contact with al-Qaida leaders and facilitators.
The targeted leader used Taliban compounds from which to launch attacks on the Pech Valley Road in Kunar and emplaced a heavy machine gun on the eastern ridge line of a nearby village to provide over watch for his sub-leaders. The Taliban leader also used light machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades to support insurgent operations near the Pech Valley Road.
The air strike occurred as the targeted leader and other suspected insurgents were identified in a remote area in Darah-ye Pech District.
The International Security Assistance Force is still gathering information to confirm if the targeted Taliban leader was one of the insurgents killed in the strike.

Kandahar Province
Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban facilitator who operates primarily in the Panjwa’i district, along with several suspected insurgents, during a joint security operation in Kandahar province Jan. 7.
The Taliban facilitator is directly responsible for coordinating the construction and planning of improvised explosive device and suicide vehicle-borne IED attacks throughout the central part of the province. He has direct contact with other Taliban facilitators in the area. Recent reports indicate he unsuccessfully attempted multiple attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Security forces followed leads to a compound in the district where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. The security force conducted a search of the compound where the Taliban facilitator along with several suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning.
The security force found 1,000 pounds of processed hashish and 10,000 pounds of unprocessed hashish at the compound. Before leaving the compound the security force destroyed the drugs. Taliban insurgents are known to sell drugs in order to purchase weapons and equipment to fund insurgency.
No women or children were injured or detained during the operation and the security force conducted the operation without firing their weapons.
