In November 2010, insurgents looted the mosque, the largest in Gizab district, and then set fire to portions of it, burning several Korans in the process.
Through a local development shura, or community leaders identified the need for material to support the plan to refurbish the mosque, and that support was offered and provided by members of Special Operations Task Force – Southeast.
Over the last two months community leaders devised and completed the plan to refurbish the damaged sections of the building, which included removing debris, repainting the walls, rebuilding the roof, replacing vandalized windows, and purchasing new prayer rugs.
The project is now complete and the mosque has re-opened for use by villagers from the surrounding area.
KABUL, Afghanistan – Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban leader along with two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Khash Rod District, Nimroz province yesterday.
The Taliban leader operated out of Pashtu village in Gulistan District, Farah province, where he was responsible for directing improvised explosive devices attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the area. He is associated with Taliban leaders and foreign fighters in the area.
Security forces followed leads to a targeted location in Khash Rod District, where Afghan and coalition forces conducted a search after securing the compound.
The Taliban leader along with two suspected insurgents was detained after initial questioning at the scene.
