Lieutenant General Caldwell currently serves as the Commander, NATO Training Mission – Afghanistan and Commander, Combined Security Transition Command - Afghanistan.
The NTM-A / CSTC-A, in coordination with NATO Allies, partners and key Afghan stakeholders generates the Afghan National Security Forces, develops capable ministerial systems, and resources the fielded force to build sustainable capacity and capability in order to enhance the Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan’s ability to achieve stability and security in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant General Caldwell’s prior deployments and assignments include serving concurrently as Commanding General of the US Army Combined Arms Center at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Commandant of the US Army Command and General Staff College, Deputy Commanding General for Combined Arms, US Army Training and Doctrine Command, and Director of the Joint Center for Security Force Assistance (JCSIFA). Prior to his assignment at Ft Leavenworth, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Strategic Effects and spokesperson for the Multi-National Force – Iraq during OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM; Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne Division to include Hurricanes Katrina and Rita civil support operations; Senior Military Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of Defense; Deputy Director for Operations for the United States Pacific Command; Assistant Division Commander, 25th Infantry Division; Executive Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Commander, 1st Brigade, 10th Mountain Division; a White House Fellow, The White House; Politico-Military Officer in Haiti during OPERATION RESTORE/UPHOLD DEMOCRACY; Brigade Operations Officer, 3rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division during OPERATIONS DESERT SHIELD and DESERT STORM; and Chief of Plans for the 82nd Airborne Division during OPERATION JUST CAUSE in Panama.
Lieutenant General Caldwell’s decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), the Defense Superior Service Medal (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Legion of Merit (with two Oak Leaf Clusters), the Bronze Star (with one Oak Leaf Cluster), Humanitarian Service Medal (with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters), Military Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal, Presidential Service Identification Badge, Office of the Secretary of Defense Identification Badge, Joint Chiefs of Staff Identification Badge, the Louisiana Cross of Merit, 2008 Honorary ROCK of the year, and Honorary Member of the Sergeant Audie Murphy Club.
Lieutenant General Caldwell graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1976. He earned Masters Degrees from the United States Naval Postgraduate School and from the School for Advanced Military Studies at the United States Army Command and General Staff College. Lieutenant General Caldwell also attended the John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University as a Senior Service College Fellow.
