CAMP LEATHERNECK, Afghanistan – Thirty-one Afghan National Army soldiers and Afghan Border Police officers graduated from the joint non-commissioned officer course, Feb. 24, at the Joint Security Academy Southwest here.
Students in the course learned advanced skills and tactics during the eight-week course. They completed the requirements mandated by the Ministry of Defense as well as the Marine combat skills course, which is not offered at any other training facility.
“It is very significant to recognize those achievements and the hard work of noncommissioned officers who make up the backbone of any great organization and army,” said Sgt. Maj. Walter O’Connell, Regional Command Southwest Headquarters Group sergeant major. “There is no doubt that you have worked very hard through the past eight weeks and learned from one another, as well as shared in the knowledge and skills you were taught.”
“The things you learn here will give you the tools to perform your job and help your people,” said Brig. Gen. Ghulam Faroug Parwani, the deputy commander of the Afghan National Army’s 215th Corps. “If we have well-trained police officers and soldiers, our people will trust in the abilities we have to provide security for them.”
As training continues at JSAS, the increasing ability of ANSF to provide security and stability for Helmand province has also increased. Courses like this supply ANSF with better trained police officers and soldiers ready to take over security in Helmand province.
“I would just like to encourage you to continue the fight, continue to take care of yourselves and your men, continue to work hard and continue to learn,” said O’Connell.
