The International Security Assistance Force joins President Karzai in condemning the killing and wounding of dozens of Afghan civilians in a suicide attack in Kunduz province today.
“In direct contradiction to Mullah Omar’s highly-touted proclamation prohibiting insurgents from harming Afghan civilians, today they once again demonstrated their true disregard for the safety of the Afghan people,” said Rear Admiral Vic Beck, ISAF Director of Public Affairs.
“Over the last seven days alone, insurgents have been responsible for over 200 total Afghan civilian casualties, claiming the lives of more than 50 civilians. As the insurgents continue to turn the Afghan people against them, we will continue working with the Afghan government in bringing the responsible parties to justice.”
Intelligence reports led the joint security force to targeted compounds where Taliban leaders transport weapons, ammunition, insurgent fighters and explosives from Baluchistan, Pakistan into Kandahar, Helmand and Nimroz provinces.
At least 4 Haqqani facilitators, 1 Taliban facilitator and 1 Taliban Munitions/IED Facilitator were captured along with multiple insurgents.
Wet opium and various weapons caches were discovered in several provinces. Forces called in an air strike which was highly successful.

Nimroz Province
Three insurgents were detained during an Afghan National Security Force and International Security Assistance Force operation in Nimroz province yesterday.
Coalition forces tracked down a known drug courier and interdicted his vehicle. Security forces confiscated two AK-47s, one PKM machine gun and destroyed 1,543 pounds (700 kilograms) of opium.
Bamyan Province
An ISAF patrol in Bamyan district, Bamyan province found a weapons cache consisting of 3,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, 14 85 mm rockets, six grenades and a mine.
All weapons have been or will be destroyed by security forces.
Takhar Province
In Bahkar district, Takhar province, Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban and Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader, detaining several suspected insurgents during an operation yesterday. Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene.

Jowzjan Province
In Jowzjan province, an Afghan National Security and ISAF patrol received small-arms fire from an unknown number of insurgents in Qush Tepah district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces requested close air support and engaged the enemy position. Initial reporting indicates one insurgent compound was destroyed and there were no civilian casualties.
Helmand Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Taliban munitions and IED facilitator and one suspected insurgent during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday. The facilitator operated in the central region of the province where he purchased and distributed IEDs and munitions to Taliban insurgents.
Intelligence reports led the security force to the targeted compound in the city, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The facilitator and one suspected insurgent were detained for involvement in insurgent activity after initial questioning at the scene.
Kandahar Province
ANSF and ISAF forces operating in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, found a weapons cache consisting of 2,750 PKM machine gun rounds and 190 DSHK anti-aircraft rounds.
In Ghorak district, Kandahar province, an ISAF patrol found 660 pounds (300 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate, 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of wet opium, two pistols, one shotgun, 7 40 mm rounds, six grenades, one anti-tank mine and one pressure plate.

In Chagai Hill village, Registan district, Kandahar province, combined forces detained two suspected insurgents during a clearing operation. Intelligence reports led the joint security force to targeted compounds where Taliban leaders transport weapons, ammunition, insurgent fighters and explosives from Baluchistan, Pakistan into Kandahar, Helmand and Nimroz provinces. Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the compounds peacefully before the joint security force cleared and secured the areas. The suspected insurgents were detained after initial questioning at the scene.

Khost Province
A detained Haqqani network facilitator admitted to conducting an improvised explosive device attack against a civilian bus in Bak district, Khost province in April 2009, in which eight civilians were killed.
The attack was planned by the Khost Haqqani network deputy shadow governor and carried out by the Haqqani network facilitator in retaliation for civilians cooperating with Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
The facilitator was detained by Afghan and coalition forces in Khost province Feb. 14, where he was responsible for supplying, moving and distributing Haqqani network insurgents in the area who conduct IED attacks.

Afghan and coalition forces targeted two Haqqani network leaders, detaining one, a facilitator, and several suspected insurgents during two separate operations in Terayzai district, Khost province yesterday.
One network leader operates in Sabari district where he is responsible for coordinating IED and small arms fire attacks while the other transported weapons throughout the province and according to recent reporting, planned the assassination of an Afghan National Army general.
Intelligence reports led security forces to the targeted compounds in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The network leaders, facilitator and suspected insurgents were detained based on initial questioning at the scene.
One armed insurgent with an AK-47 and chest rack exited one of the buildings and was unresponsive to multiple instructions given to him by Afghan forces, resulting in him being injured. The individual received immediate on-scene medical care from a coalition medical technician and was medically evacuated to a coalition medical treatment facility. Three AK-47s, four grenades, three chest racks, 150 pounds (62 kilograms) of IED making material and ammunition were recovered by the security force.

Nangarhar Province
In Surkh Rod district, Nangarhar province, Afghan and coalition forces targeted a Taliban facilitator detaining one suspected insurgent during an operation yesterday. The facilitator is associated with Taliban insurgents who carry out attacks in Kabul City against residents within the area, along with Afghan and coalition forces. He is responsible for moving IEDs and supplies into Kabul from Pakistan for attacks against Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan officials, and Afghan and coalition forces.

Paktika Province
Afghan and coalition forces detained a Haqqani Network facilitator during a security operation in Orgun district, Paktika province, yesterday. The facilitator operated in the district where was responsible for the movement of supplies and explosives along with facilitating the movement of suicide bombers for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
Security forces followed leads to a targeted compound in the district, where Afghan forces called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully before conducting a search. The senior elder of the madrassa turned the targeted facilitator over to the security force and he was detained.
