Thousands Protest in Jordan’s Capital
VoA News: Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Jordan's capital city of Amman after Friday prayers, repeating their demand for government reforms.
The protesters gathered a day after Jordanian Prime Minister Maaruf Bakhit rejected calls for a constitutional monarchy.
Opposition supporters have carried out a string of protests during the past couple of weeks, similar to those in Tunisia that led to the ouster of that country's former president.
Jordanians have been demanding relief from high food prices and also have accused the government of failing to fight corruption.
Muslim opposition groups also have called for a constitutional monarchy that would strip King Abdullah II of his executive powers
