03.28.2011 Story by Petty Officer 2nd Class Devon Dow HACHINOHE, Japan – Seabees from the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Far East continued cleanup and recovery efforts at Naval Air Facility Misawa’s Fuel Pumping Station 2, March 28.

“Things are progressing here on a day-to-day basis,” said Chief Petty Officer Billy Knox, from Chapin, Ill. assigned to NAVFAC Far East. “Getting this pumping station up and running again is important because it will get the fuel flowing back to through the fuel pump system that is important to the base.”
Seabees have dug trenches and are using water eductors to remove the floodwaters from the site. Once dewatering is complete, NAVFAC Fat East will reconstruct the security fence surround the station that was damaged and begin interior cleanup of the facility.
“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we have been making good progress,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Charles Hannah, a Tulsa, Okla. native assigned to NAVFAC Far East. “After the tsunami, on our first visit here, the station was flooded. Today, with our dewatering efforts we are able to navigate around the site more effectively and better assess what we need to do to get things back in operational order.”
The station plays a supporting role in transferring fuel from to the FISC Yokosuka Defense Fuel Support Point Hachinohe to Misawa Air Base.
NAFM is a major hub supporting Operation Tomodachi, and currently hosts several repositioned aviation squadrons that provide humanitarian assistance and support to the local community.
