Turkey Detains Journalists in Coup Plot Probe
VoA News; Turkish police have detained more journalists as part of a controversial crackdown into a suspected network accused of plotting to overthrow the government.
Police searched the homes of 11 people, mostly journalists, during early morning raids in Istanbul and Ankara Thursday.
The raids and detentions are part of Turkey's ongoing investigation into the Ergenekon network, a secularist group authorities allege is planning bombings and other attacks to discredit the government and trigger a military takeover.
Among those detained is Ahmet Sik, who co-wrote a book about the crackdown on Ergenekon. Another is Nedim Sener, an investigative reporter for a major Turkish newspaper.
Last month, authorities arrested three journalists from an opposition website for alleged involvement in the group.
More than 300 people, including other journalists, academics, politicians and retired military officers, have been arrested as part of the investigation.
Critics say the detentions are an effort to silence opposition.
