March 30 2011 UPS is once again responsible for the shipment of a fake bomb on one of its flights. This time, a wedding cake box was used to transport a timer, detonator and wires, which went undetected until the flight reached its destination in Istanbul, Turkey.
A UPS spokeswoman said: "Two weeks ago, a suspicious package travelled within the UPS network aboard an all-cargo aircraft from the United Kingdom to Istanbul, Turkey.
Metropolitan Police arrested a 26 year old man in north London on March 23.
“A search was undertaken at an address in north London in connection with this inquiry and is now complete.”
"UPS is co-operating with the UK Department for Transport's investigation of the incident. UPS has a multiple-layered approach to ensure security."
Last October a bomb disguised as a ink toner cartridge was found on a UPS plane flying from Yemen to the United States. The package was discovered during a stop in Britain.
'We have already begun an investigation which will look at all aspects of this incident, including UPS’s procedures,' a Department for Transport spokesperson commented.
'The UK has one of the toughest security regimes for air cargo in the world. All security measures are subject to continuous review.'
A spokesman for Britain's Department of Transport announced the investigation Wednesday, saying the government is taking the incident very seriously.
