Taliban Attacked on Multiple Fronts
ISAF: PARWAN, Afghanistan (April 22, 2011) – As Taliban fighters increasingly intimidate and launch attacks on civilian populations, village elders and residents, known as Guardians of Peace, are reporting insurgent activities to the ANSF, Afghanistan’s True Protectors.
Coalition forces continue to mount pressure with successful offensive operations that rid Taliban fighters from known hiding spots throughout the 14 provinces of Regional Command-East.
In addition to this pressure against Taliban forces, recent reports indicate increased infighting among insurgent groups.
According to an article in Pajhwok Afghan News, Hezbe Islami militants began engaging with Taliban fighters in Nerkh District, Wardak Province on Saturday. The clash that erupted between Taliban commander Mullah Zakhil and HIG commander Azizullah remains an ongoing firefight. Residents reported to the news agency that Zakhil was injured and several supporters have been killed.
In governance news, a training center currently under construction in the Sayed Abad District of Wardak Province is slated to open in late 2011. Contractors are building the project as an advanced training facility for the Afghan National Police.
Complete with a weapons qualification range, barracks, auditorium, three dining facilities, a gymnasium, parade field and eight classroom buildings, the compound is expected to produce 3,000 students per training cycle.
While it is very important for the ANP to have this large of a facility in which to train, maintaining such a large center will not be an easy task. However, ANP Col. Abdul Khalil is excited to be taking charge of such a huge task. “We will train the ANP here (and) we have spent a lot of money here. It is very important to us.
We want to take care of this place,” said Khalil. “I want to make the academy the best in Afghanistan. I want each young man to come here and train here right, that is my object.”
In development news for Wardak Province, a charitable organization committed to improving the quality of life for the youth, women, poor and elderly of Afghanistan dedicated a new 30-bed maternity hospital in Hessa Dowom on April 13.
Ehsan Bayat, Chairman of the Bayat Foundation, announced that the Bibi Khairi Gul hospital fills a critical need in the Behsood district, an underserved and underdeveloped area of Afghanistan.
A large crowd joined Ehsan Bayat; Sadiq Modaber, Head of the Presidential Office and Consultant Ministers Administration; Mohammad Halim Fidai, Governor of Wardak province; and public health representatives on Wednesday, April 13, 2011, as Ehsan Bayat transferred the hospital to the Health Minister of Wardak Province.
The Bibi Khairi Gul Hospital is one of two hospitals completed and dedicated on April 13, 2011, by the Bayat Foundation in the Behsood district to serve patients from the surrounding region. The one-story hospital took 16 months to finish and is built to a modern design, with a complete electrical system, patient rooms, operating room, delivery room, post-op recovery room, a pharmacy, doctor's office, reception area, storage and bathrooms. Bayat Foundation hospitals and clinics in Afghanistan have treated over 400,000 patients and the number keeps growing.
"We are thankful to have the opportunity to aid the women of Afghanistan through medical resources such as Bibi Khairi Gul hospital,” said Ehsan Bayat. “You can see the hope and excitement on the faces of the local women, and all that it means to the families and villages in Wardak Province."
Since 2005, the U.S.-based Bayat Foundation, www.bayatfoundation.org, has promoted the well-being of the Afghan people. Founded and directed by Ehsan and Fatema Bayat, the Foundation has contributed to more than 200 projects to improve the quality of life for the youth, women, poor, and elderly of Afghanistan by constructing new facilities and sustainable infrastructure, and by promoting health, education, economic, and cultural programs.
