War in Afghanistan News reports provided by ISAF Joint Command. Operations are reported in the following provinces: Nangarhar, Uruzgan, Helmand, Kunar, Paktika, Wardak, Zabul, Khost and Paktiya.
Kunar was the scene of a large operation where 17 insurgents (including foreign fighters) were killed. Weapons recovery occurred in Uruzgan, Helmand and Paktika today. In Nangarhar Province, a suicide bomber failed in its attack against a convoy, killing himself and another insurgent. Insurgents, Taliban leaders and Haqqani leaders were rounded up in Wardak, Zabul, Khost and Paktiya.

Nangarhar Province
A suicide bomber injured a civilian while attempting to attack a coalition convoy in Bati Kot district, Nangarhar province, today.
The attacker used a vehicle homemade bomb in the failed attack, which killed the attacker and injured a second insurgent. No coalition forces were killed or injured in the incident.
Coalition forces provided medical care to the injured civilian and secured the site after the incident.
Uruzgan Province
A combined Afghan and coalition patrol in Chorah district, Uruzgan province discovered a weapons cache, yesterday. The cache included 645 7.62 mm rounds, 190 PKM machine-gun rounds, 15 charge bags, 20 assorted small-arms rounds, six rocket-propelled grenade warheads, six RPG fuel cells, five radios, one RPG launcher and various other weapons.
A separate cache discovered in Chorah yesterday included 100 PKM machine-gun rounds, 15 RPGs, five grenades, five RPG fuel cells and a rifle.
Helmand Province
In Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, a coalition force discovered approximately 40 40 mm rounds and two 82 mm mortars, today.

Kunar Province
Afghan and coalition forces killed seventeen insurgents including foreign fighters and detained one suspected insurgent while searching for an al-Qaida senior leader during a security operation in Dangam district, Kunar province last night.
The senior al-Qaida leader commands and facilitates insurgents throughout the province and border region, directing weapons acquisition, movement, employment of fighters and equipment to Kunar for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
As the combined security force approached the target area, three armed insurgents maneuvered in an attempt to ambush the force, and they were killed by an air weapons team. Following that engagement, security forces approached two compounds and initiated callout procedures in an attempt to have insurgents surrender without violence. At both compounds insurgents ignored the callout and pointed rifles at Afghan and coalition forces, who shot the insurgents in self defense.
As the combined force initiated clearance of a third set of compounds, they received fire from a group of three people standing near a door. One of the individuals held a spotlight on Afghan and coalition forces, while another stood behind them and fired. The security forces returned fire, killing the insurgent and what turned out to be two women he was hiding behind.
At the last set of buildings, the combined force noticed an armed sentry on the roof. There were multiple armed individuals inside the building. Two of them were barricaded in a room. The security force engaged the armed individuals, resulting in seven insurgents killed.
As the security forces were departing, four armed insurgents moved to attack. An air weapons team was called in, resulting in all four of the insurgents being killed.
A total of 24 women and 65 children were present and they were protected by Afghan and coalition forces during this operation.
Paktika Province
A combined Afghan and coalition patrol in Dila wa Khoshamand district, Paktika province detained several suspected insurgents and found a weapons cache, today. The cache consisted of approximately 10 rocket-propelled grenades, an AK-47s with 12 full magazines, four grenade machine-gun rounds, two grenades and a radio.
All weapons have been or will be destroyed by security forces.

Wardak Province
A combined Afghan and coalition force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, yesterday.
The leader is responsible for placing roadside bombs along Highway 1 targeting coalition force convoys, and coordinating operations with senior Taliban leadership in the area.
Multiple intelligence reports led the combined security force to the Taliban leader’s suspected compound in the district. After isolating the area, the security force had all occupants exit the compound.
While searching the compound, the force identified several individuals with suspected ties to the Taliban network. They were detained for further questioning. Weapons, ammunition and a chest rack were also found on the scene. The security force ensured the safety of civilians throughout the search.
Zabul Province
A combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban facilitator and one of his associates during a security operation in Shah Joy district, Zabul province, yesterday. The facilitator was responsible for planning attacks specifically targeting coalition forces along Highway 1.
The combined security force targeted the facilitator at a location in Shah Joy. After locating a compound in the district, the security force isolated the area and called for occupants to exit the buildings. The Afghan members of the force were careful to ensure the safety of the women and children before continuing their search. While searching the area, the force identified and detained the facilitator and one suspected insurgent for further questioning. The security force also found ammonium nitrate, propane tanks and homemade-bomb making materials. There were no shots fired during the operation.

Khost Province
A combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Haqqani Network facilitator, along with one suspected insurgent, during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday. The facilitator transported weapons and explosives in preparation for operations and was directly involved in homemade bomb attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces.
Based on multiple reports of insurgent activity in the area, the combined security force searched for the facilitator at a compound in the district. The force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit, ensuring the safety of the women and children. The security force searched the area and conducted interviews with residents. The facilitator was identified and detained based on the interviews. One individual with suspected ties to the insurgent network was also detained for further questioning. There were no shots fired during the operation.

In Sabari, a separate Afghan and coalition force captured a Haqqani facilitator during a security operation, yesterday. The facilitator transported weapons and explosives in preparation for attacks. He was directly involved in homemade bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The combined security force was led to the area based on multiple intelligence reports of suspected insurgent activity in the area. After isolating and securing the area, the force interviewed residents on the whereabouts of the facilitator. As of result of the interviews, the security force identified and detained the facilitator. Another individual, with suspected ties to Haqqani insurgency, was also detained for further questioning. No shots were fired during the operation.
Paktiya Province
A combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Haqqani Network leader during a security operation in Dzadran district, Paktiya province yesterday. The leader was responsible for planning and executing large-scale attacks targeting Afghan National Army and coalition forces. He was directly involved in the transport of homemade bomb materials for his group operating in the province.
The security force searched for the leader at a compound in the district based on intelligence tips. The force commenced their search by calling on all occupants to exit the buildings. After the safety of the women and children was secured, the force continued their search and conducted interviews with residents. The leader was identified and detained at the compound based on the interviews. One suspected insurgent was also detained for further questioning. The entire search was conducted with no shots fired.
