North Korea Returns Remains of Briton Killed in Korean War
4 May 2011 VOA News North Korea says it has returned the remains of a British airman who was killed during the Korean War.
The official Korean Central News Agency said the remains of Desmond Fredrick William Hinton were handed over Wednesday to British diplomats at the border village of Panmunjom. It said another British soldier's remains were returned in 1995, and that North Korea is ready for similar cooperation in the future.
British embassy officials said the remains will be sent to a U.S. center in Hawaii to try to confirm their identity.
Hinton was killed during a bombing raid in 1952. KCNA said his remains were located at the request of his family in 2002 and buried with unidentified relics on the spot where he died. It said the family made a new request in March of this year for the remains to be brought home.
KCNA said North Korea is prepared to render positive cooperation in such cases in the future in the interest of healing the wounds caused by the Korean War.
