The patrol was attacked with heavy machine gun fire by a group of insurgents firing from an elevated firing position. Several insurgents were killed when an ISAF air weapons team and close air support assets returned fire on the insurgent firing position, killing the attackers.
Several men were detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected Taliban insurgents during an overnight security operation in Sabari district, Khost province, Thursday.
The individuals were detained while the Afghan-led security force was searching for a senior Haqqani network leader who conducts roadside bomb attacks in throughout Sabari.
The security force searched a compound when they discovered the individuals. The force decided to apprehend the men after initial questioning. They were taken for further questioning.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province a coalition force patrol killed several insurgents during a security operation, Friday.
The coalition force patrol was engaged by insurgents with small arms fire. The patrol positively identified the insurgents’ position and returned fire with assistance of an air weapon team killing several insurgents.
No civilians were harmed during the operation.
Also in Nahr-e Saraj district, a coalition patrol discovered a weapons cache Friday. The cache consisted of 81 detonators, 44 pressure plates, one spider charge, four radios, 13 remote control packs, 99 pounds (45 kilograms) of homemade explosives, one detonation cord and 30 homemade fuses.
All weapons were seized by security forces.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Marjah district, Helmand province, Thursday. The leader directed a cell of Taliban fighters in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The Afghan-led security force tracked the leader to his compound following several intelligence tips. They searched his compound and conducted interviews with residents. After the interviews, the force detained the leader and a suspected associate.
