KANDAHAR, Afghanistan (July 18, 2011)– Members of the 3rd Afghan National Army Commando Kandak, partnered with coalition Special Operations Forces, completed a clearing operation in Zharay district, southern Afghanistan on July 11th.
The partnered force conducted the operation to increase security in the area and enable local governance and development, by degrading the insurgents’ ability to conduct operations in the district.
Historically, insurgents have used Zharay district as a safe haven and a staging area for attacks on Afghan and coalition forces. Reports also indicate that the Taliban coordinate improvised explosive device attacks on the surrounding roadways from the district.
During the operation, Afghan and coalition SOF identified and destroyed one IED along with a storage area containing IED making materials.
As a result of this operation, the Commandos effectively disrupted the Taliban’s freedom of movement and improved the security conditions for the villagers in the area, according to a representative from Special Operations Task Force-South.
No civilian casualties and no property damage resulted from these operations.
