URUZGAN, Afghanistan (August 7, 2011) – An Afghan National Army Special Forces medic advised and assisted by a coalition Special Operations Forces team medic, treated a trauma patient with life threatening injuries in Gizab, August 1.
The patient was brought to a coalition Special Operations Forces site in Gizab village after sustaining severe facial trauma during a motorcycle accident, according to an ANASF medic.
“There was not enough time for the patient to be rushed to the clinic [in Gizab], so we had to perform lifesaving treatment at the VSP [partnered Special Operations Forces site],” said an ANA SF medic.
After the patient was stabilized and treated, he was released with instructions to visit the local clinic at the Gizab district center for continued monitoring and care, according to a coalition Special Operations medic.
“We will continue to help build the clinic’s capacity to treat traumatic injuries through referrals and an ongoing promotion program,” said an ANA SF team leader.
According to a Gizab district official, the local populace recognizes and trusts Afghan medical providers as lifesavers.
“In addition to our security efforts in the area, helping provide medical care is essential in building trust among the local citizens,” said an ANA SF medic. “We want to show the people that the Government of Afghanistan is able to provide safety and security for the Afghan people.”
