Opposition fighters faced stiff resistance Saturday from forces loyal to Moammar Gadhafi in their efforts to advance into Zuwarah. A major supply route to Tripoli crosses Zuwarah. The coastal city is about 50 kilometers from the Tunisian border.
On Friday, rebels seized Ras Adjir, a border post along the same route.
Many Libyans living in the capital have no electricity or running water. Transitional National Council spokesman Mahmoud Shammam said Saturday the opposition group hoped to make the “difficult period” for Tripoli residents as short as possible.
British warplanes fired precision-guided missiles at the Sirte, Gadhafi's hometown, bunker complex. British Defense Secretary Liam Fox said NATO was not specifically targeting Mr. Gadhafi, but that the airstrikes are intended to make sure that the country's long-time ruler and his forces can no longer continue “waging war.” Libya's leader has dropped out of sight since rebel fighters seized Tripoli; Sirte is considered one place where he may be hiding.
TNC leader Mustafa Abdel Jalil said Saturday that rebels have no “factual” reports on the whereabouts of Mr. Gadhafi or his sons.
The UN's Mr. Ban said the international community is ready to send a police force into Libya – if requested – because the country is “awash in small arms.”
At least 25 people have been killed in northern Iraq when a car collided with a bus that was filled with vacationing families.
Iraqi police say the collision took place Saturday near Kirkuk, a city about 280 kilometers north of Baghdad.
Police say the bus caught fire after the crash and passengers were trapped inside. At least one person in the car was also killed.
Investigators say the bus was carrying travelers from Baghdad to the Kurdistan region.
Syrian activists say forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad have clashed with anti-government protesters in Damascus and several other cities.
Activists said Saturday that pro-government forces had attacked demonstrators leaving a mosque in the capital. They also say security forces killed one person at an opposition rally in the northern Idlib province.
Syria's closest ally, Iran, is calling on the government in Damascus to listen to the people's “legitimate demands.”
The comments Saturday by Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi were the first such remarks from Iran since the five-month-old uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began.
Salehi warned of dangerous regional implications if the crisis in Syria was not solved peacefully. He said a power vacuum in Syria would have “unprecedented repercussions'' among its neighbors.
But despite the widespread calls for peace, Syrian activists say forces loyal to Mr. Assad once again attacked anti-government protesters. At least two people were killed in the fighting in cities across the country.
However, the Syrian government has denied reports of protests in the capital. The state-run SANA news agency says foreign news organizations “fabricated” the stories.
In a separate development, the Arab League discussed Syria's crisis at a meeting in Cairo Saturday.
On Friday, rights groups and activists said security forces shot at protesters in the Damascus suburb of Douma, Dara'a province in the south and the eastern town of Deir Ezzor. They said at least three people were killed.
However, Syria countered by saying “hooded gunmen” opened fire on police in Deir Ezzor, wounding three officers. SANA said law enforcement officers responded by shooting and killing two of the gunmen. The news agency also said “gunmen” attacked a security building in Douma, wounding two guards.
Russia has introduced its own U.N. resolution on Syria, which calls for Bashar al-Assad's government to halt its crackdown on anti-government protesters but does not mention the sanctions sought by the U.S. and European nations.
The United States, Britain, France, Germany and Portugal two days earlier circulated a stronger resolution that calls for sanctions against Mr. Assad, influential members of his family and close associates.
The resolution introduced by Russia on Friday calls for an immediate end to all violence, but fails to condemn the perpetrators or punish them.
