South: A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a large cache of improvised explosive device-making materials in Kandahar district, Kandahar province, Friday. The cache consisted of 1,500 pounds (681 kgs) of urea nitrate. The cache was seized and safely destroyed.
Also in Kandahar province, a coalition force patrol discovered a large cache of bomb and IED-making materials in Dand district, Friday. The cache consisted of 38 bags of homemade explosives, three suicide vests, a 500-foot timed fuse, 20 electrical blasting caps, a pressure cooker and assorted electronics. All items were seized and safely destroyed.
A combined Afghan and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed two insurgents during an operation to disrupt a narcotics network in Now Zad district, Helmand province, Thursday.
The two insurgents were killed after they fired at the patrol with small-arms weapons. In addition, the patrol seized and safely destroyed a quantity of small arms and ammunition.
East: In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani facilitator, Thursday.
The facilitator is responsible for weapons and explosives transfers in preparation for attacks in the region.
Over the past 48 hours, coalition forces discovered and safely detonated two vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices. A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered an explosives cache during an operation in Andar district, Ghazni province, Thursday. The patrol seized a vehicle with 660 pounds (300 kgs) of explosives. The vehicle and explosives were to be used against ANSF and coalition forces. The explosives were safely destroyed on site.
The first was discovered in the Zarghun Shahr District, Paktika Province. The second was found in Andar District, Ghazni Province. Explosive ordnance experts disposed of the devices in a controlled detonation before they could cause any casualties or damages to the local areas.
Also, militant actions by insurgents resulted in five Afghan civilians being killed, while two others were wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated in the Yahya Khel District of Paktika Province.
Another Afghan civilian was wounded after being attacked by several insurgents in the Mayden Shahr District of Wardak Province.
